1 to 5 p. m. at the American Legion
clubhouse on Kapiolani Blvd. About 50
service men will be guests.
   December 15--The Thursday Knitting
club will give a Christmas party from
11:30 a. m. to 3:30 p. m. at the Phillip
E. Spaldings� Laie home. Swimming and
lunch will be enjoyed by 25 service men.
   December 15--The Neuman club,
University of Hawaii, has invited 16
service men to a Christmas party be-
ginning at 7:30 p. m. at Hemenway
hall, university campus.
   December 16, 8 p. m.--McKinley high

tion commission will present a variety
show at the McKinley high school audi-
torium for 2,000 men at each perform-
ance starting at 8 p. m.
   December 7--The 27th infantry band,
USA, will give a concert from 4:30 to
5:30 p. m. at the Iolani place grounds.
   December 9--The University of Ha-
waii theater guild has invited 450 service
men to the dress rehearsal of the guild�s
current play. Far Off Hill, at 8 p. m. at
Farrington hall, university campus.
   December 10--The Honolulu League of
American Pen Women will entertain 40
service men on a conducted tour of the
city from 2 to 5 p. m.
   December 10--The Rt. Rev. and Mrs.
S. Harrington Littell will hold their
usual Monday open house and evening
of home entertainment at their Emma
square home, Bishop�s House, from 7:30
to 9:30 p. m.
   December 12--The Filipino Friendship
circle will present a program and serve
refreshments to 50 Filipino service men
from 8 to 10:30 p. m. at the Filipino
United center, Palama and Kanoa Sts.
   December 18--The University of Ha-
waii will have 500 service men as guests
at a Honolulu Symphony orchestra con-
cert at the university gymnasium be-
ginning at 8:15 p. m.
   December 27--Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Wysard will entertain four service men
at dinner and home entertainment at
their home, 2541 Malama place, from 6
to 10:30 p. m.
   December 29--Mr. and Mrs. James F.
Morgan are entertaining four service
men at a family dinner beginning at 6
p. m. at their home, 2421 Armstrong St.
   December 29--Mr. and Mr. Richard
Gartley have asked four service men to

   SEATTLE. (AP)--The housing prob-
lem has become so acute in the
Puget Sound national defense area
that Mayor Earl F. Milliken has ap-
pealed to Seattle residents to dust
off their old bedsteads, take the old
blankets out of the mothballs and
throw open their extra rooms to de-
fense workers.
   Even the most palatial residences
may now display �room for rent�
signs in their windows in response
to the Mayor�s plea.
   Three weeks ago investigators
found only 65 vacant houses for rent
in the greater Seattle area and de-
fense housing experts say around
8,400 more men will be needed here
by the end of March on primary
defense contracts alone.
   The investigators found that auto
and trailer camps are jammed to
overflowing and that newcomers are
actually sleeping in garages and in
dark windowless attics of old dilapi-
dated houses.
   Arthur Vandersys, chairman of
Seattle�s defense housing committee,
said the situation is certain to be-
come more serious because �be-
