816. Henry Ballinger was born in 1660 in Bennington, or Benninghamshire, England. He died on 10 Apr 1733 in Burlington Co, Nj. He married Mary Harding on 4 Sep 1684 in Evesham, Burlington Co, NJ.

Henry was a Quaker

Ballingers known to be of French extraction. Name originally De La Ballinger. Of the religious sect of Huguenots and driven out of country due to religious persecution of 1625 to 1700. Some came to America directly, but this line went to England thru Holland and settled in Benninghamshire. Here William Penn was the leader of the Quaker movement and the Ballingers united with them. Henry emmigrated to America in 1678 and united with the Burlington Meeting (as the Quakers termed their churches) at Burlington, NJ. William Penn had previously purchased this county as am asylum for the persecuted and came in person in 1677 to make America his permanent home. Henry Ballinger met and knew William Penn.

From the best research I have found, Henry Ballinger in Burlington, 1677, was not of French Huguenot descent. He was a Quaker who lived in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England where Ballengers are found before 1400.

I've seen a great deal of speculation, but very few documented specifics ref the Huguenot connection of Henry Ballinger (born c. 1660). In "Three Centuries of Ballingers in America," Emma Barrett Reeves quotes others to the effect that Henry, himself, might have migrated from France to England and then to New Jersey. Others have suggested that an ancestor of Henry's might have come from France to England and established the family in Nailsworth. I don't find the theory that Henry, himself, was the Henri who is supposed to have come from France. If he was born c. 1660, he was only 17 years old when he boarded "The Kent" to come to America, and he was a practicing Quaker. Furthermore, the timing makes no sense in relation to the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1886. It was that revocation that brought about the renewed prosecution of Huguenots in France which triggered their exodus. By the time this happened, Henry was already in America. That would leave us with the possibility that some ancestor of Henry's came to England, perhaps in the middle or the end of the 16th century before the promulgation of the Edict of Nantes. But all this is speculation. Is there ANYONE out there who has seen any documentation of the Huguenot roots of the clan?

According to the Preface of "Three Centuries of Ballingers in America," Henry Ballinger was the son of Aubrey, son of William and Elizabeth (Harris) Ballinger.
