Calhoun Ga. June, 30, 1899 (special) About 10 o'clock yesterday morning Laura, the fifteen year old adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.D. GOSWYCK, died from an overdose of strychnine, administered by herself, at her home, one mile east of this place. Many rumors have been afloat as to the probable cause of the deed, but the general belief among the people living near her home is that she took the poison with suicidal intent.

The coroner's jury, which has been in session yesterday afternoon and today adjourned about 1 o'clock till Monday, when the examination of witnesses will be resumed.

Laura was a bright and promising child, and seemed to be happy an contented in her new home. Last December Mr. and Mrs. Goswick went to a nearby city and procured the child from a benevolent institution, and since then have been sending her to school, and to all appearances she was infatuated with her new home and surroundings.

Early yesterday morning while Mrs. Goswick was in town shopping, one of the farm hands, so is said, went up to the house after a bucket of water, and was accosted by Laura, who went out to the well and started a conversation with him. While they were talking, Mrs. Goswick came in sight, on her return from town. As soon as she saw Mrs. Goswick, Laura ran into the house, saying she had to take a dose of medicine. Soon afterwards she ran out to the gate and met Mrs. Goswick and asked her what she had brought to her from town. Both went into the house and were looking over the morning's purchases when the child fell across the bed in great pain. Upon being questioned, she said she had taken a dose of strychnine, but the importunities of Mrs. Goswick failed to elicit a reply as to who had given her the poison.

A physician was sent for, but before he arrived death had come to relieve the poor child's sufferings. A quantity of strychnine was found in the room, but diligent inquiry has so far failed to locate the party from whom it was purchased. The interment took place in the FAIN cemetery this afternoon.
