Dear Kay, Hi cuz!
I heard from my sister this morning, that she had contacted you,
after I emailed her about your web site. I thinkshe has a better record
of the family than I have as she's using some sort of software geared to
genealogy. She also has my copy of the History of Decatur County, published
1995 (I think), that details our line. I did a lot of the editing for the
family on the articles we submitted. My uncle, Charles Henry Yarbro is
our dedicated family historian. He has done a lot of research on the family,
but he doesn't have a computer yet. I imagine this will boosthis interest
in online genealogy and corrspondence! By the way, there is a National
Yarbrough Conference being held in Memphis, Tennessee in late October.
I'll attempt to get the dates and info for you if wish.I'm sending a jpeg
file of John Lawson Yarbro, his wife Dora Vise and their children. My grandfather
is on the far right in the pix. I just found a copy of this pix with names
identifying family members, that I did several years ago.
And
I just located this info on my Jazz drive. Several of the edits I did for the Decatur County History book regarding information on the family.
Yarbro Family - Decatur County History
The Yarbro family has an ancient name and history , going back to
Anglo Saxon times in England. It is believed the amily's early ancestors
came to Lincolnshire as Norse Viking invaders around 1000 AD. From the
Eleventh century onward, the name Yarborough appears in historical records,
linked either to somenotable person or with a particular place. In the mid-1600's,
Richard Yarborough immigrated from England to Virginia. He lived and prospered
until his death at age 87 in 1702. His grave is the oldest known in the
Petersburg Cemetery. Through the years Richard was joined by other English
family. The American family, (all spellings), are descended from Richard
and kin. They numbered 25.000 in the USA by 1992! The Decatur County Yarbro
Family migrated from North Carolina in the early 1820's.Included in this
migration were the families of Edmund and Sophia Gossett Yarbrough. Edmund
was born in Anson
County, North Carolina in 1776, and his wife Sophia, was born in
Maryland in 1771. They lived here until their deaths in 1850 and 1841.
Edmund's children and grandchildren played a large role in settling
and populating Decatur County, particularly William -"Master Bill", Henry,
and Aquilla. They established Yarbro's Landing and moved throughout the
county, marrying cousins and into most other
County families. William's daughter, Sophia, married Jake Fisher
and their daughter, Mary Elizabeth, wed cousin Joseph Gallatin
Yarbro. Mary Yarbro of this union, married William Smith, leading
the large and prominent Smith Family in the county.
Henry, wed Delilah Crawley. They settled on Whites'
Creek, had 14 children and established the Yarbro Family Cemetery. They
are buried there with over 50 descendants. Aquilla and his
wife, Winifred, moved to the Parsons area. The Yarbros originating
there are their descendants. Henry's children, playing a large role in
the County's history, included Milton Jasper, Lorenzo "Rance" Dow,
James, Rufus Martin, Joseph Gallatin, and John Lawson. One son,
died for the Confederacy and others continued the trek West.
Two sets of children came from Jasper's marriages; Dr. "Rance" moved
to Eva; Rufus, father of Dudley, joined the Mormons; and Joseph Gallatin's
sons became area leaders. John Lawson, who married Dora Vise, daughter
of George Hubbard and Tennessee Wayne Lafferty Vise, remained on the family
farm of over 100 years. Their children and spouses are: Henry-Ethel Wallace;
Welborn-Gladys Crawley; Alfred-(never married); Tennessee Belle-Jim England;
Rosetta Pearl-Perry Thompson; John Garrett-Leora Keeton; Guy-Clara Swift;
and Joe Hubbard-Allie Mae Tate. A reunion and Yarbro Family Cemetery Days
are held annually at Decaturville and Whites' Creek, a National Yarbrough
Conference is held in some major metropolitan area each year. Latest burials
in the Yarbro graveyard are "Bud" Gettis Kindle, Walter Stanley Yarbro,
Martha Yarbro Marsh and daughter Elizabeth Swift Vining Bivens, and neighbors
Elvis and Mabel Ivy Turnbo."Who Dares Wins" is the Yarbro family motto,
taken from an early English family crest. -Charles Henry Yarbro

GUY YARBRO
Guy Yarbro, native of Decatur County, met his future bride, Lucy
Clara Swift, when they were students at Professor Tucker's Academy at Scotts
Hill. They were wed in a buggy, just across the line in Decatur County-
Yarbro's license was issued in his home county. Yarbro continued his education
at Bowling Green (KY) Business College before returning home and teaching
school. Later he entered politics and was elected Decatur County Court
Clerk. He and his brother, Alfred David, were enterprising young men and
by relying on their farm background, began investing in land, timber, livestock and
general merchandising. Their Uncle Eli Vise was their mentor. Their siblings
were Henry Yarbro, Welborn Yarbro, John G. Yarbro, Joe H. Yarbro, Tennessee
Yarbro England and Pearl Yarbro Thompson. All eight are deceased in 1995.
The two entrepreneurs interest was whetted by bargain land prices in the
Mississippi River lowlands, and in the
early 1920's bought Menglewood Box Company lands including the entire
mill village of Menglewood, some 20miles west of Dyersburg on the Obion
River.Guy Yarbro was chosen to make the move, and prompted probably the
last cattle-livestock, "Wagon Train West",
in West Tennessee. Yarbro, on horseback, (he never learned to drive
in his 84 years), gathered drovers, white and black families, cattle, horses,
mules, hogs, and dogs for the 120 mile trek. Wagons were loaded with household
plunder, livestock feed, men, women, and children. A designated cook maintained
a "chuck wagon" with foodstuffs. It was said that all prepared food was
eaten the first night out.
The wagon train traveled the road routes through villages to Jackson
and Dyersburg, and if lucky, putting up at night in some farmer's pasture
or lot. The hardest day for the weary travelers and livestock was from
Dyersburg to Menglewood because of the unimproved roads. Previously, in
bad weather, Menglewood was reached by train. Mrs. Yarbro and six children
remained in Decaturville where the older ones were in school. They were
(including all spouses), first born, Malcolm Ross, b.1906, m. to first
wife: Mary Alice "Mae" Smith and second wife: Ruth Yarbro Gobelet; Walter
Rudolph, m.Maude Smith; Dora Isabelle, m. Barney E. Twilla; George Lawson,
m. Frances
Hansbrough; Martha Elizabeth, m. first-Jimmy C. McCullough, second-Gordon
Vining, third- Albert J. Marsh; John Lee, Sr., m. Ollie Mae "Cissie" Alley;
Dyer County born: Charles Henry, m. Frances Ann Curry; and Welborn Jacob,
never married. Survivors in 1995 were Dora Twilla, John L. and Cissie Yarbro,
Charles H. Yarbro, and Frances Yarbro, all of Dyersburg; Frances Ann Yarbro
of Memphis, Albert Marsh of Nashville and Ruth Yarbro of Decatur County.
(still remaining in Sept 99)(my note) The family was reunited at Menglewood
in 1925. Guy Yarbro, in his published obituary was called "a legend in
his own lifetime". He was said to be the largest
individual land owner in West Tennessee. He was a loyal member of
the First United Methodist Church, served Dyer County Court as a magistrate,
civic and school leader and bank director. In employment , housing, medical
and social care, especially during the Great Depression of the 1930's and
during historic Mississippi River floods, his efforts for large numbers
of families and individuals was legendary. During floods he farmed and
rented pastures on high ground around Dyersburg, (areas now occupied by
businesses, shopping centers, malls and factories) He was president of the
Dyer County Levee Board and his proudest accomplishment was the completion
of the
main line levee system. He contributed more levee rights of way
than sold, put forth efforts to securing Interstate 155 and the Mississippi
River Bridge to Missouri. Almost every view from 155 from Newbern to Dyersburg
to Caruthersville, Missouri; including the main and little levee system,
Obion River work, Guy Yarbro Road, from old Hwy 20 to the Booth spoint slab,
the Great River Road and vast productive farm fields have a Guy Yarbro
"touch". He never lost his love for his Decatur County heritage, family
and home. At his death he owned the family home place and home. He hosted
holiday and other gatherings there including an Annual Squirrel Hunt for
family and friends, attending the last even though already seriously ill.
He and "Miss Clara" are buried side-by-side with other family at Fairview
Cemetery in Dyersburg. Charles Henry Yarbro owns and lives in the old Dyersburg
home and the land where Menglewood once stood.

(The 1850 census -If I can find it, shows that William Yarbrough has two grandchildren in his home, one was a "Fisher child" age 11, and the other was George W. Wooten age 12) Both listed as grandchildren. The Fisher grandchild was listed born in Ark.
James T Yarbrough, b. 3-8-1815, TN, married Nancy Atcheson 2-4-1840
Henry Co, TN. He married again to Louisa Childress/ers 4-27-1845
in Benton Co. TN. The 1850 Census shows James & Louisa Yarbro in
Decatur Co. TN with children: J L ? m/age 11, F J f/age 9, & Nancy
age 7. Also James age 1 year. Neighbors were Aquilla
(a61) & Winny (a58) Yarbro.
Then the 1870 census shows James & Louisa C Yarbrough in White Co.,
AR & in 1890 James & Louisa Yarborough lived in Logan Co.,
AR. It was later in that decade that they moved to Johnson Co, AR with
their sons Levi (my grandfather)& James T who homesteaded
what became Yarbrough Mountain. They are both buried there in Sherman
cemetery as James T and L C Yarbrough.
Of the 2nd marriage I can be certain but if the 1st marr info is not
correct, as I see there are other opinions, please let me know. My father
(age 92) says he was told that James T was marr twice. I 'feel' like
my info is correct bec the last dau was named Nancy same as mother
which I understand was customary following death fr childbirth. And
the dates are 'in line'. Have had no trace of these 3 children since
however.
Children of James & Louisa: James T (1848), Joshua (1851), William
Meredith (1853), Elizabeth (1856), Phelix (Felix) Moses (1858), Lotilla
'Sis'(Moore)(1860), Mary Jane 'Molly'(Goad)(1863), John & Louisa
(1866), Levi Daniel (1868), & David Pinkney 'Pink'(1871)
Joshua, Moses & Elizabeth were young adults when their parents
moved to Logan Co. & are said to have remained in White Co. Searcy
AR area. I would welcome any info on them.
I am trilled to see others are researching the Arkansas lines. Looking
forward to meeting many of you at the Yarbrough convention in
Memphis Oct 21-24.

Hello,
My maternal great grandfather was a Jim Booker of Bon Aqua, Tennessee.
Fought for Confederacy, was wounded and
discharged, became preacher, possibly Nazerine, post war. (bough-arbor
preacher???) Had several children. Recall, Vincent
(Vinnie) moved to Detroit in early 1920's. Another married a Dr Woods
of Bon Aqua. My grandmother, Ollie Mae, moved to
Nashville and married Golden Cornealous Alley, about 1919-1920.
I have some more sketchy info about Jim and family that I can't find
at the moment. I should of listened to mother when she was
still able to recall this information. All help appreciated!
