PERSONAL DATA: Jerusha Newcomb was the second of four children born to Simon Newcomb and Jerusha Lothrop. Daughter Jerusha was born in Martha's Vineyard and later went to Lebanon, CN with her family. The family lived in Lebanon where Simon lived on his father's farm, which he inherited upon the death of his mother in 1756. He left Lebanon with about 60 other families from Lebanon for Nova Scotia, many to Cornwallis. There Jerusha married neighbor Archelaus Hammond in the first marriage of the Planters recorded in Kings County. (See the Archelaus writeup for more details).

The Newcombs can be traced back to ship's captain Andrew Newcomb (b 1618) in England who eventually settled in Boston. His son Andrew (b abt 1640) left Boston for Kittery, Maine where he married Sarah about 1661 and had seven children. In 1674/75 they moved to Martha's Vineyard, perhaps due to the outbreak of King Philip's War, where he became a prominent citizen and extensive landowner. Son Simon (b 1665) grew up on Martha's Vineyard and married Deborah there about 1687. Simon and Deborah had nine children and moved in 1713 to Lebanon, CT where he established his farm. Simon was his youngest son.
