I have been to Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plaines, NY and I have seen Sarah's grave.

In the 1850 Census she is listed as living with her brother Lawrence, and her parents Wilhelmus and Corneila, next door to her other brother George.

In 1860, 1870, and1880 she is listed at living with her son in law Hiram Killmer. 

Looking at the 1850 Census, Sarah is living with brother Lawrence and her future son in law is living 3 doors away.  I find this amazing.

Mr. Thomas Wolcott was one of the first settlers of Tolland, CT and he did reside there a number of years. 

After his first wife died he moved his family to Taghanic, NY and married again to Fanny.

Lt. Thomas Wolcott, b. 1702 Windsor CT, d. Taghanic NY. 

He settled at Tolland CT about 1722, fencing and improving part of the 400 acres his father had bought in 1719, in 1729 he sold land left him by his grandfather Allyn, and in  1739 he sold his land at Tolland and moved to Dutchess Co. New York, leased land from Cadwallader Colden in "The Oblong", in 1749 engaged in legal dispute over ownership of this land with John Sackett.

I, Henry Wolcott of Windsor, do make this my last will and testament: I give to my son Henry Wolcott all my lands in Colebrook, and all my lands in Willingtown, and all my lands and rights to common and undivided lands in the Township of Windsor, and the lands called the Equivalent, to him and his heirs forever. I give to my grandsons, Thomas Wolcott and Luke Wolcott, 2-3 parts of my 400-acre farm in Tolland that is bounded south on Coventry, as also my three rights or lotts in the Cedar Swamp in Tolland, share and share alike, to them and their heirs forever. I give to my son Thomas his four daughters 1-3 part of my 400-acre farm in Tolland, to them and their heirs forever. And my will is that my son Thomas shall have the improvement of what land he hath before this time enclosed at any time within fence of my 400-acre farm in Tolland during his natural life. I give to my son Gideon Wolcott that lott of land in Windsor I bought of my brother Simon Wolcott, whereon I now live, from the river to the end of the three-mile lotts, bounded east on the commons, with the appurtenances, to him and his heirs forever. Simon WOLCOTT was born on 11 Sep 1624 in Golden Manor, Tolland, Somersetshire. He died on 11 Sep 1687 in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was buried in Old Graveyard, Windsor,CT. Simon Wolcott was a pioneer in the settlement of "Windsor Farmers", moving across from old Windsor, in about 1680, to a domain below the mouth of the Scantic River. He was the youngest son of Henry the emigrant, and his marriage to Martha Pitkin was a romance of the colony. Martha Pitkin was a sister of William Pitkin of Hartford, Attorney General and Treasurer of the colony. Handsome, accomplished, and twenty-two, she had come out from London to visit her brother intending to return. But her beauty and accomplishments "put the colony in commotion" and it resolved that she should be detained through a suitable marriage; the "stock was too valuable to be parted with." So the wise heads set about to discover the most suitable young men to pay court to her. The choice, after due deliberation fell upon Simon Wolcott, then a widower (his first wife, a girl of eighteen, had died a month after their marriage) and living on his own estate in Windsor; and, to the joy of the match-makers, he succeeded in securing her hand. They were married in 1661. The first fifteen years of the married life of the London beauty were passed on a frontier farm up the Farmington River, where she bore her husband eight children. Then came King Phillip's war when the family were driven off and the farm destroyed. At this depressing period, when they were back in Windsor village to make a fresh start, Roger the ninth child was born. Simon died seven years after the move to Windsor Farms and two years later Martha became the wife of David Clarke, sometime Secretary of the Colony, and returned to Windsor with her younger children. Of her nine Wolcott children, seven lived to maturity. The daughters all married well and the sons became leading men, established at the "Farmers" on their own estates, along the winding path which developed into the broad tree-shaded town "Street".

Simon , son of Henry Wolcott , was born in 1624-25 in England . He was five years old when his father came to America , and he came with other children, later. He lived opposite his father in Windsor on land that he bought of Goodman Whitehead on the road to Hartford . He had a grant of land at Simsbury in 1667 . He was prominent in public life. In 1668 he was on a committee of the general court to further planting. He removed to Simsbury in 1671 and was captain of the train band there, August 11, 1673 ; selectman, 1674 . He and other settlers were driven from their homes during King Philip 's war, and it is said that he buried the brass kettle containing the family silver, sinking it in the mud of the swamp, and that it has never been recovered. He had a grant of two hundred acres from the general court in 1680 and was one of the six in the colony honored with the title "Mr". He married (first), March 19, 1657 , Joanna Cook , born August 5, 1638 , died April 27, 1657 ; (second), October 17, 1661 , Martha Pitkin , who came from England with her brother, William Pitkin , attorney-general and treasurer of the colony. Simon Wolcott died September 11, 1687 , and his widow married (second) Daniel Clark , and died October 13, 1719 , aged eighty years. Her son, Governor Roger Wolcott , wrote of her: "She was a gentlewoman of bright natural parts which were well improved by her education in the city of London . She came to New England in 1661 and the same year was married to my father. The rest of her useful life, she spent in the wilderness in doing good and setting an example of piety and prudence, charity and patience". Notes for Martha Pitkin:

Martha Pitkin, sister of Mr. William Pitkin, the progenitor of the Pitkins in America, and of Roger Pitkin of London, was born in England in 1638.  She followed her brother to America in 1661, to return with him to England, "not once supposing he intended to remain in the wilderness,' as she expressed it.  Her first greeting on meeting her brother, whom she found feeding his swine, was, "I left a brother in England serving his king, and find another in America serving his swine."  She was a lady endowed with more than ordinary talent, improved by an excellent education.  The reception she met with in the colony, was most flattering; her comely form and accomplished manner making the colonists anxious to retain her in their country.  In the words of the Rev. Thomas Robbins, for many years the pastor of the church she attended, "this girl put the colony in commotion.  If possible she must be detained.  The stock was too valuable to be parted with.  It became a matter of general consultation what young man was good enough for Miss Pitkin."  Tradition says that so many young men wished to marry the accomplished beauty that they cast lots for her hand, but fails to say what part Miss Pitkin was to take in the affair.  The facts are, that the sons of Henry Wolcott, one of the first settlers of East Windsor, were well pleased with Miss Pitkin, and to avoid all question of strife or jealousy, it is believed it was decided by lot among themselves which one should sue for her hand.  The lot fell to Simon Wolcott, the youngest son; at all events, he pressed his suit, and was successful.  Her brother favored the match, and she became the wife of Simon Wolcott, and subsequently the mother of Governor Roger Wolcott, grandmother of Governor Oliver Wolcott, and great-grandmother of the second Governor Oliver Wolcott and of Governor Roger Griswold.  Governor Ellsworth was also a lineal descendant.  Her granddaughter married Governor Matthew Griswold.

It was stated in the funeral sermon of Governor Roger Wolcott, her ninth child, "That he never went to school, but was educated by his mother in her own dwelling."

After the death of her husband Martha Wolcott became, in 1693, the second wife of Mr. Daniel Clark, one of the first settlers of Windsor.  He was the secretary of the colony before the charter, and was one of the magistrates named in that instrument.  A man of influence in the colony, an assistant from 1662 to 1664, he was appointed by the town of Windsor to sit "in the great pew which was wainscoted for the magistrate.  He died Aug 12, 1710, aged 88.

In the will of William Pitkin she is mentioned as "his sister Clark". She is buried in East Windsor, Conn., the resting place of several of her children.  For a more complete history of her descendants, see the "Wolcott Memorial".

From Ralph Turner's research: Martha Pitkin was born on 12 Dec 1639 Berkhamsted, Bucks, England.  She was christened on 12 Dec 1639 in Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England.  She was buried in 1719.  "Also Martha Pitkin wife of Simon Wolcott born 1639 dyed 15 Oct 1719." on the tombstone.  She died on Oct 13, 1719 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  A headstone marked her grave in the old Sough Windsor churchyard but her name was later inscribed on the monument of her first husband in the cemetery at Windsor.  According to tradition and thought to be true, while on a visit to her brother, Martha accepted a proposal of marriage from Simon Wolcott made at the suggestion of leading men of the colony.  She became the ancestor of 7 New England governors.

In 1890 he was graduated from Harvard college, and, after spending some months in foreign travel, he was assistant at Harvard college library, 1893-'94; librarian of the Brookline, Mass., public library,[p.338] 1894-'98; and was made librarian of the Boston Athenæum in 1898. He was vice-president and president of the Massachusetts library club, 1894-'96, and treasurer of the American library association, 1896-'97. He was married to Ethel Stanwood (B.A.Wellesley, 1894), author of "History of the Stanwood Family." He is the author of "The Descendants of William Bolton of Reading, Mass." (V) Governor Roger Wolcott , son of Simon Wolcott , was born January 4, 1679 , at Simsbury, Connecticut . He became the foremost man of his day in the colony and from him are descended many distinguished American statesmen. Among them may be mentioned Governor and United States Senator Edward O. Wolcott , of Colorado , and Governor Roger Wolcott , of Massachusetts . From the private journal of Governor Wolcott we gain an excellent account of his life. In 1680 when he was an infant, the family settled on the east side of the river at Windsor , at some distance from any school, and he never attended a school. He was instructed by his parents. There was no church in the vicinity. His father died leaving his buildings unfinished, his land to be cleared, and in debt, but the widow and her six children managed, and, as the governor says, "we never wanted". After his mother married Daniel Clark , he went to live with her in her new home on the west side of the river. In 1690 he learned to write and read; in 1694 he was apprenticed to a clothier or fuller to learn the trade, and January 2, 1699 , he engaged in business as a clothier on his own account and became very successful. He was elected selectman of Windsor in 1707 ; deputy to the general assembly in 1710 . He took part in the expedition against Canada in 1711 as commissary of Connecticut stores. He was elected councilor in 1714 ; judge of the county court, 1731 ; of the superior court, 1732 ; deputy governor and chief judge of the superior court in 1741 . He was commissioned major-general of the colonial army by Governor Shirley , of Massachusetts , and Governor Law , of Connecticut , and led the Connecticut troops in the expedition against Cape Breton in 1745 . He was then sixty-seven years old, the oldest man in the service except Rev. Mr. Moody . Governor Wolcott said: "It was a tough business. Divine Providence appeared wonderfully in our favor and should forever be remembered with thankfulness". Louisburg surrendered and the expedition was successful. In 1750 he was elected governor of Connecticut . In November, 1752 , some Spanish merchant vessels took refuge in New London harbor and through the neglect and delay of the owner suffered much loss while in port. Governor Wolcott was accused of oppression and held responsible in the popular mind for the Spaniard's misfortunes. For this reason he was retired from the governorship in 1754 . But 2119 when the case reached the King's council, he was absolved entirely from blame and in a measure the public confidence in him returned. In 1755 he lacked but two hundred votes of reëlection. After his retirement from public life, "he divided his time between devotion, reading, agriculture and the enjoyment of his friends. His body was strong and well proportioned, his countenance and deportment peculiarly adapted to command reverence and esteem. His wit was ready and uncommonly bright, his method of reasoning (free from sophistry) was clear and manly as became a generous inquirer after truth and not a noisy wrangler for victory. He was a sincere unfailing friend to every industrious, virtuous, honest man, whatever his walk in life. He was a wise legislator and able statesman. While he was a judge he held the balance of justice with a steady, unwavering hand, and being far superior to venality of the influence of personal, family or party connections, he pronounced the law impartially on all the causes brought before him. As a governor he appeared to advantage. This was his proper element, for he seemed originally formed to govern. He was a kind and provident husband and parent. His moral character was unblemished, his religion and piety unaffected, and he died as he had lived, a member of the Second Church of Windsor ." Anyone who knew the late governor of Massachusetts , his descendant and namesake, must be reminded by this contemporary eulogy of the physique, bearing and character, of the late Roger Wolcott , of Massachusetts .

Governor Wolcott 's mansion house was built in 1704 and stood until a recent date. Some of the panels on which the paintings illustrated the Indian attack on Deerfield , have been recovered. He published three books, "Political Meditations," (1720 ); "A Tract on a Controversial Letter on the New England Churches," (1761 ); "Letter to the Freemen of Connecticut " (1761 ). He died May 17, 1767 .

Wolcott, Roger

WOLCOTT, Roger, governor of Connecticut, was born in Windsor, Conn., Jan. 4, 1679; son of Simon and Martha (Pitkin) Wolcott, and grandson of Henry and Elizabeth (Saunders) Wolcott. At that time Windsor was a frontier town, and after engaging in trade, Wolcott was in 1709, chosen to represent South Windsor in the Connecticut general assembly. He was raised to the bench of justices in 1710; accompanied the expedition against Canada in 1711, as commissary of Connecticut stores, and in 1714 was elected a member of the council. He became judge of the county court in 1724, of the superior court in 1732, and deputy governor and chief-justice of the supreme court in 1741. In the expedition against Louisburg in 1745, he was commissioned major-general by Governor Shirley of Massachusetts, and was second in command to Pepperrell. He was governor of Connecticut, 1750-54. He was married to Sarah Drake, a descendant of Job and Mary (Wolcott) Drake. Governor Wolcott died in Windsor, Conn., May 17, 1767.

We the underwritten, being present wth Mrs Warham, who spent her last days in our family, she discourseing with us respecting her Estate, declared that she had formerly given her cousin Miles Marwine such a multitude that if she had Thousands she would not give him a penny. She did not know whether she had anything to give away. Disowned that she had any Will, and sayd further that her cousin Miles Marwin desired that she would make over her Estate to him. She did not know but that she might live to need and expend it all. This she had said before. Mary, the wife of Captain Newbery, and Abigail the daughter, both affirm that Mrs. Warham said to them, when she was of good understanding and sound memory, concerning her Estate, that if there was anything left when the Court had the consideration thereof, she had thought little Miles Marwin should have somewhat, and the other that lived wth her so long; & as for her moveables that were brought into our house, Return Strong, Mary Newbery & Abigail do Testify she freely gave them to us & said they should not be taken from us. Invt. œ320-13-06. Taken 27 August, 1707, by Benjamin Newbery and Samuel Moore. Will dated 25 May, 1697. The last will and testament of John Allyn, of Windsor, is as followeth: Imprimis: After the payment of all due debts and funeral charges, I dispose of my outward estate as followeth: All my land at Hartford swamp I give to my brother Benjamin, and to his heirs and assigns after him, never to be alienated from the name. If he have no male heir, then to be to my brother Thomas, or, next, to my brother Samuel. For the rest of my lands and moveable estate, I give to the children of my brothers and sisters; only to my sister Gilbert's child and to my sister Jane's child I give œ5 more than to any of the rest. To my brother Matthew Allyn and his children I give nothing; only to his son Josias I give a set of silver buttons. I appoint my brother Thomas Allyn my executor, and with him my brother Benjamin Allyn when he shall be of age.

Page 214--6 September, 1714: Ebenezer Gilbert of Farmington, Adms. on the estate of John Allyn, late of Windsor, appeared in Court and declared that he justly suspected Capt. Timothy Thrall, Samuel Allyn and Joanna, the wife of Samuel Bancroft, and Anne Allyn, widow, all of Windsor, to have in custody or possession some considerable part of that estate. Citation was issued for these persons to appear at Court to be interrogated upon oath.

Adms. now produced in Court an account of his Adms. on sd. estate, which, being imperfect, is not allowed. He prays for time to perfect sd. account, which is allowed.

Page 13--26 November, 1742: Ann Allyn, alias Loomis, Adms. on the estate of Benjamin Allyn, which sd. Benjamin was an executor on the estate of John Allyn, of Windsor, decd., by her son Benjamin, her attorney, presented to this Court an account of sundry debts and charges against the estate of John Allyn, whereby it appears the sd. Benjamin Allyn, executor aforesd., decd., has paid in debts and charges œ60-16-09; also an account of charges against the estate of œ2-07-09, which was exhibited by Henry Wolcott, of Springfield, which account is accepted by the Court. Also, Benjamin Allyn, attorney, exhibited an account of credit received to the sd. estate of œ5-17-02; accepted.

 Hugo, his wife Marie Haye and their three sons, were probably among the group mentioned in the Abraham Hasbrouck Diary as embarking in April 1675, "and from England they sailed to America and arrived at the town of Boston and from Boston they sailed to New York and from New York to Esopus in Ulster County and arrived there in July 1675...." They joined their fellow countrymen at Hurley. But after the birth of a daughter, Marie died and it was the second wife, Jannetje Wibau, who accompanied Hugo to the new settlement at "The Paltz". The first Wolcott family in the American colonies was that of Henry Wolcott of Tolland, Somerset, and his wife, Elizabeth Saunders, who emigrated to America in 1630. Henry was the son of John Wolcott, miller, of Tolland, Somerset, son of John Wolcott, miller, of Tolland, son of Thomas Wolcott who was on the Tolland Subsidy Tax Roll of 1525.

Henry, his wife, and three of their sons sailed from Plymouth on the Mary and John . They arrived in Dorchester MA 31 May 1630. Their two daughters and youngest son arrived a few years later. Henry settled at Windsor CT and was one of the 19 men named in the Connecticut Charter. He was a member of the CT House of Delegates and House of Magistrates. He died in 1665 and is buried in the churchyard of the First Congregational Church at Windsor CT.

Few families have been more distinguished in the annals of Connecticut, than the Wolcott family. The ancestor of this family was Henry Wolcott, an English gentleman of considerable fortune, who was born in the year 1578. During the progress of the Independents in England, he embraced the principles of that sect, and hence becoming obnoxious to the British government, he found it expedient to emigrate to America. His emigration, with his family, took place in 1630. They settled for a time at Dorchester, in Massachusetts.

Mr. Wolcott is represented to have been a man of talents and enterprise. Possessing an ample fortune, he associated himself with John Mason, Roger Ludlow, Mr. Stoughton, and Mr. Newberry, who were also men of wealth, in the settlement of Windsor, in Connecticut. About the same time, as is well known, settlements were made at Hartford and Wethersfield.

In 1639, the first general assembly of Connecticut was hold in at Hartford. It was composed of delegates from the above towns. Among these delegates was Henry Wolcott. Since that date, down to the present time, some of the members of this distinguished family have been concerned in the city government of the state.

Henry's decendents include three governors of Connecticut, one of which signed the Declaration of Independence.

ESTATE: On 3 April 1633 ordered to maintain sixty feet of fence at Dorchester, for three cows [DTR 1]. Granted fourteen acres in the meadow beyond Naponset [DTR 322].

   In the Windsor land inventory on 11 January 1640[/1] "Henry Woolcott the elder" held eleven parcels: a twelve acre homelot; twenty-two acres in the Great Meadow; eight acres in Plimouth Meadow; fifty-eight acres toward Hartford; twenty-four acres over the Great River; a parcel over the Great River twenty rods in breadth and three miles in length; a parcel over the Great River ten rods in breadth and three miles in length; eighteen acres over the Great River; a parcel "upon Plimouth Meadow bank"; fifty acres over the Great River; and eight acres and fifty rods in swamp [WiLR 42]. For settling the estate of Thomas Marshfield, Henry Wolcott received seventeen acres of upland and six acres of swamp, and purchased of the overseers of Thomas Marshfield a parcel over the Great River, thirteen rods in breadth and three miles in length [WiLR 42].

   In his will, dated 30 May 1655 and proved 4 October 1655, "Henry Wolcot" bequeathed to "my wife ... all my houselot, orchard, garden, hopyard and my lot in Plimmouth Meadow during the term of her life, also ... two of my cows and half the household goods in my dwelling house"; "I leave my land in England to Henry my eldest son without encumbrances, also I give unto him my two Books of Martyrs"; to "Christopher my second son my lot in the great meadow after my death and my houselot and housing upon it after the death of my wife he paying out of it thirty pounds after my wife's decease as I shall further appoint"; to "George my third son the five pounds he owes me and five pounds more"; to "Simon my youngest son all my land on the easterly side of the Great River and my lot at Arramummett"; to "the children of Henry my eldest son five pounds to Henry the eldest of them and to the rest of them forty shillings apiece"; residue to be equally divided "amongst all my children"; "Henry Wolcot my son" to be overseer; to "Christopher my son ... my lot in Plimmouth Meadow after the decease of my wife" [Hartford PD Case #6179; Manwaring 1:167-68].

   The inventory of the estate of "Mr. Henry Wolcot deceased," taken 13 June 1655, totalled £764 8s. 10d., of which £351 5s. was real estate: "the houselot, housing, orchard, gardens, press, garner [granary] and things thereto belonging," £135; "twenty-two acres in the Great Meadow," £88; "8 acres in Plimmouth Meadow," £32; "24 acres at Podunk ... with a barn," £54; "Marshfield's lot and house," £24; "the lot at Arramomets," £10; and "four other lots not fenced," £8 5s. [Hartford PD Case #6179].

   In her will, dated 5 July 1655 and proved 4 October 1655, "Elizabeth Wolcot" bequeathed to "my son George" £10 in moveables; to "Simon my son" some cloth; "the rest of my household goods to be equally divided betwixt Christopher and Simon my sons"; "the rest of my clothes to be equally divided betwixt my two daughters Anna and Mary"; "I would entreat Christopher to let Simon to dwell in the house and to have the use of it a while"; "my two cows to be equally divided amongst all my grandchildren" [Hartford PD Case #6167; Manwaring 1:166].

ASSOCIATIONS: "John Woolcott heretofore of Glaston in the County of Somerset, yeoman, and late of Watertowne in New Engand, planter, deceased," left behind two minor daughters. One of those chosen to be guardian was "Henry Woolcott of Windsor in N.E." [Lechford 39-41]. The exact degree of kinship between this John and Henry has not been determined, but they were probably not-too-distant cousins.

COMMENTS: On 22 July 1631 "John Wollcott," writing from Wellington, Somersetshire, addressed "his loving cousin Henry Wollcott Junior in Matapan (Dorchester) these in New England," asked to be remembered to "your father and mother [and] to your brothers," and reported that "your brother Simon hath been very sick of late and so hath your sisters also.... Your brother John continues in his old course of living" [NEHGR 4:23-24]. The addressee was the younger Henry Wolcott, the eldest son in New England of the immigrant.

   On 15 April 1639 "John Wollcott" of Bishop's Lydyard wrote to "my loving brother Hennory Wollcott dwelling in Winsor by Quenattecott River in New England" to inform him that "our dear brother C[hris]topher Wollcott of Wellington" had died on the 25th of March 1639 [NEHGR 2:373-74].

   The statement has been made that Henry Wolcott lived at Ash Priors, Somersetshire, after 1607, and baptisms are given for sons Henry and Simon, but the parish where these events took place is not stated with assurance [M&JCH 17:176]. Further evidence is needed on this point.

   In 1640 Henry Wolcott was in partnership with Thomas Marshfield and Samuel Wakeman in the voyages of two ships across the Atlantic, and he presumably made the voyage himself in one of these vessels [Lechford 324-25].

Wolcott, Hon. Henry, sen'r., was an early settler at Windsor. He came to Massachusetts from Tolland, England, and moved his family to Windsor in 1636, to continue with Mr. Warham's church, with which he had united in England. He had married Elizabeth Saunders before he left his country, and had some family. His son Henry, jr., was about 25 years of age when the family moved to Windsor, in 1636, and soon became an active business man. Hon. Henry was a gentleman of education, wealth and distinction, and had been a magistrate before he left England. He was long a magistrate and assistant in the colony, though he had become somewhat advanced in life before he settled at Windsor. He was made the first constable of the town, which at that day and for many years after, was an office of great honor and power in the colony. In 1637 he was appointed collector of rates--deputy in 1639 and '41--juror in 1641, 3 and 4--a committee with Major Mason to locate and erect fortifications--was frequently a member of both houses or branches of the General Court, and upon many of the most important committees in the colony--was one of the nineteen signers of the Petition to Charles II. for the Charter of Connecticut, all of whom were the principal men in the colony. Mr. Wolcott was the ancestor of more Governors of the Colony and State than any other individual, not only in the State, but in the United States. He was the ancestor of three Governor Wolcotts in Connecticut, viz. Roger and two Oliver Wolcotts--two of whom had been Lieutenant Governors; also by the marriage of his daughter to the first Matthew Griswold, of Saybrook, he became the ancestor of the two Governor Griswolds, viz. Matthew and Roger. His son Simon married a daughter of the first William Pitkin; and by this connexion he also became the ancestor of Gov. Pitkin. The children of Hon. Henry were, Henry, jr., George, Ann, Mary and Simon. Simon's children were, Elizabeth, Martha, Simon, Joanna, and the Hon. Roger--the latter was the second in command at the siege and reduction at Louisburg, in 1745, and in 1751 he was elected Governor of Connecticut. The first Oliver, LL. D., was Governor in 1796 and 7. The second Oliver, LL. D., had been Secretary of War, and Governor from 1817 to 1827. Erastus, who served as General in the War of the Revolution, was a brother of Oliver, who was also General in the same service. Erastus was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Connecticut for some years. This worthy band of a single line, were the descendants of Henry Wolcott, of Windsor. Of the same line of ancestry was the Hon. Frederick, late of Litchfield--a brother of the last Gov. Oliver--who was a gentleman no less talented and worthy than any of his ancestors. There are at this day no public men by this name in the high public stations of our country. It was well for the Wolcotts that they lived when integrity and talents were the only qualifications for preferment and high places of public trust. There are two of the sons of Hon. Frederick--one in Boston, the other in New York--who are merchants of distinction. A grandson of the last Governor Oliver, and a son of the late Col. Gibbs, of Long Island, is fast rising into notice and favor as a gentleman of literature by his valuable productions. One other of the descendants in Hartford, not of the name, but of the blood, is also by his talents, industry and acquirements, making rapid progress to public favor and preferment. Hon. Henry Wolcott died in 1680. He gave in his will his seal ring to Henry, jr. He had land at Tolland, in England, at his decease, which was in the possession of John Wolcott and John Dart, which he gave to his youngest son Josiah, after the expiration of the estate given by his (Henry's) uncle Christopher to John Wolcott, sen'r., then deceased. He also held land at Willington, called Longforth, in England, in the possession of Hugh Wolcott at his decease. He at the close of his will changed his views, and gave his lands in England to Henry, jr., for life, and to the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, and to their heirs forever, by Henry, jr.'s paying annually for six years, £50 to his other three youngest sons. He was a gentleman of great wealth; his land at Wethersfield alone was appraised at £1234. His other property in this country at £2743, exclusive of his property in England.

Griswold, Matthew, (in No. 1,) was a stone cutter by trade, in England. He appears to have remained a while at Windsor, and while there, became intimate with the family of Hon. Henry Wolcott, and married his daughter Ann. He was called to Saybrook to aid in erecting the Fort and other buildings there, and finally located his family at Lyme, where he closed his life. After the death of Mr. Wolcott, Mr. Griswold made his grave-stones, which are yet standing in the burial ground at Windsor. He was the ancestor of the two Gov. Griswolds of Connecticut, Matthew and Roger. The first Matthew appears to have been a relative of Edward, who came early to Windsor. The Edward Griswold who owned land jointly with Matthew, at Lyme, in 1681, who resided at Killingworth, must have been a younger man than Edward, of

Pitkin, William, was early in the colony. He was a lawyer by profession, and often appeared in defence of criminals. He was the first attorney general appointed for the colony in 1662--and the first that induced the court to suffer a change of pleadings upon a change of jurisdiction, on an appeal to a higher court. He for a time was Treasurer of the colony. William Pitkin, Governor from 1766 to 1770--Deputy Governor from 1754 to 1766. He was often deputy and a magistrate. Either the first William must have had a son William, who was sent by Connecticut, in 1693, to Governor Fletcher of New York, respecting the militia of the colony, or he was aged when he performed the service. It has been a respectable family from Mr. Pitkin the first to the present period. As he was the first and only person of the name who came early into Connecticut, he undoubtedly was the ancestor of William who was Governor and Deputy Governor of Connecticut for 15 years; also of Rev. Timothy, minister at Farmington, and Timothy, LL. D., formerly member of Congress. The first William settled at Hartford. He taught school at Hartford from October to April, 1662, for £5--probably was poor when he began life.

Hannah's parents sailed from Lyons Hall, Blocking, Essex County, England on the ship "Lyon" and settled at Newtowne, Cambridge, Massachusetts and then in Hartford. Her father, Ozias Goodwin, was instrumental in the organization of the voyage of the "Lyon". They sailed from London on June 22, 1632 and arrived September 16, 1632 at Boston. They had been 12 weeks aboard and 8 weeks from Land's End.

RETURN TRIPS: Had "conference in England this last summer with certain merchants" (1640) [Lechford 359]; these merchants were of Barnstaple in Devonshire [Lechford 416]. Given the extent of Matthew Allyn's business dealings, it would not be surprising if he made other trips to England.

OCCUPATION: Merchant

CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admission to Cambridge church prior to 4 March 1634/5 implied by freemanship. Since the Cambridge church as a whole moved to Hartford in 1636, Allyn remained a member of that church, but by 1644 he had been excommunicated, and his attempts to be reinstated by the Connecticut General Court were unsuccessful [CCCR 1:106, 111]. Matthew Allyn probably was admitted to the Windsor church upon his move there, along with his wife, but since he died prior to Matthew Grant's retrospective compilation of Windsor church records, he does not appear in the list of those admitted after the removal of the church from Dorchester to Windsor.

FREEMAN: 4 March 1634/5 [MBCR 1:370].

EDUCATION: Signed his will with a clear, strong hand; inventory included books valued at £3 11s. Although there is no direct evidence, the nature of his business and civic activities argue in favor of his being well-educated.

OFFICES: Deputy from Cambridge to Massachusetts Bay General Court, 3 March 1635/6 [MBCR 1:164]; deputy from Windsor to Connecticut General Court 1648 to 1651 and 1654 to 1657 and assistant of Connecticut General Court 1658 to 1666; held many other important appointments for Connecticut, including Patentee for Royal Charter, 1662, and Commissioner for United Colonies, 1664 [for details see CT Civil List 1].

ESTATE: Granted one acre for a cowyard at Cambridge, 4 November 1633 [CaTR 6]; granted two acres in the Neck of Land, 2 February 1633/4 [CaTR 7]; received a proportionate share of six in the undivided meadow, 20 August 1635 [CaTR 13]; granted five acres of land, 8 February 1635/6 [CaTR 16]; held five "houses" in town, 8 February 1635/6 [CaTR 18].

   In the Cambridge land inventory on 10 October 1635 "Mathew Allen" held twelve parcels of land: one house in town with backside, about half a rood; one house in town with garden and backside, about half a rood; one cowhouse with a yard in Ox Marsh, about half a rood; one acre and a rood in Old Field; two acres in Wigwam Neck; two acres and a half on Small Lot Hill; twenty-seven acres in the Neck of Land; fifteen acres in the Neck of Land; two acres in Ox Marsh; ten acres in Ship Marsh; twenty-four acres in the Great Marsh; and twelve acres in the Great Marsh [CaBOP 25-26].

   By 7 December 1638 Matthew Allyn had purchased from Plymouth Colony their trading post at Windsor [CCCR 1:53-54], and as late as 20 March 1654 Allyn and the town of Windsor were still bargaining over this enclave within Windsor [WiLR 1:134, 1A:125; Windsor Hist 2:27-28].

   On 17 December 1638 Matthew Allen and Margaret his wife of Hartford conveyed certain lands in Devonshire to Thomas Allen of Barnstaple in Devonshire, with a condition attached [Lechford 86-87]. The grantee of this instrument was Matthew's brother, and the land may have been part of his inheritance in Devonshire.

   In the Hartford land inventory in February 1639/40 "Mr. Mathew Allen" held twelve parcels of land (all of which appear to have been granted to him early): two acres with dwelling house, outhouses, yards and gardens; two acres one rood nineteen perches in the Little Meadow; two acres (together with an island) "on which his mill now standeth"; ten acres by the West Field; eight acres nine perches of meadow and swamp in the North Meadow; thirty-two acres three roods of meadow and swamp in the North Meadow; twenty-four acres two roods of meadow and swamp in the North Meadow; eight acres one rood twenty-four perches on the east side of the Great River; sixty-four acres in the Old Ox Pasture; twenty-nine acres three roods in the Cow Pasture; twelve acres twenty-six perches in the Neck of Land; and seventeen acres three roods twenty-six perches in the Neck of Land [HaBOP 144-47].

   On 28 August 1661 the Connecticut General Court "granted unto Mr. Math: Allyn, 400 acres of upland and 100 acres of meadow, where he can find it within Conect: liberties ..." [CCCR 1:372].

   In his will, dated 30 January 1670[/1] and proved 2 March 1670/1, Matthew Allyn of Windsor bequeathed to wife Margaret Allyn entire estate for life (sons John Allyn, Thomas Allyn & Benjamin Nuberry to improve it for her benefit); to son John Allyn (after decease of Margaret Allyn) all lands in "Kenillworth in the County of New London, I say both the farm & stock upon it" as well as land in Hartford previously given to him as his marriage portion; to son Thomas Allyn (after decease of Margaret Allyn) half of land at Catch [Simsbury] (out of which "my beloved grandchild Mathew Allyn" is to get one hundred acres) as well as lands at Windsor already given him as his marriage portion; to son and daughter Benjamin and Mary Newbery (after decease of Margaret Allyn) other half of land at Catch (out of which "my beloved grandchild Mary Maudsly" is to get fifty acres); to Mary Griffen (servant) 40s.; to John Indian one suit of clothes; to sons John and Thomas Allyn and daughter Mary Newbery residue equally; wife to be sole executrix. The inventory of the estate of "Mr. Mathew Allyn deceased" was taken 14 February 1670/1 and totalled £466 17s. 2d., of which £160 was real estate: "land & stock at Kennelworth," £120; and "land at Catch," £40 ("the house & land in Windsor not inventoried because by a deed of gift it was made over to Thomas Allyn by Mr. Mathew Allyn at the marriage of the said Thom: Allyn to be to him & his heirs forever after the death of the said Mr. Mathew Allyn & Margaret his wife") [Hartford PD Case #104; Manwaring 1:171-72].

ASSOCIATIONS: Brother of Thomas Allyn of Barnstable, Plymouth Colony, as may be seen by following carefully the many entries for both Matthew and Thomas in Lechford, especially p. 418 which explicitly links the Barnstable man with Braunton in Devonshire. Thomas Allen of Wethersfield was a different man and not related to this family, nor was Samuel Allen of Windsor any relation [Hale, House 447-48]. (Matthew Allyn's extensive litigation of 1650 was with his brother Thomas Allyn of Barnstable, and not with Thomas Allen of Wethersfield [RPCC 87-88; CCCR 1:211].)

   Matthew Allyn was in some way related to WILLIAM SPENCER of Cambridge and Hartford, or, more probably, to his wife, Agnes Harris [TAG 63:33, 38-39, and other sources cited there].

COMMENTS: Matthew Allyn's first appearance in New England was in the grant of land in Cambridge on 4 November 1633 to seven men [CaTR 6], of whom three others (JOHN HAYNES, THOMAS HOOKER and SAMUEL STONE) are known to have arrived 4 September 1633 on the Griffin [WJ 1:128-30]. ("Mathew Allen" does appear in a list dated 7 January 1632/3 of those ordered to fence in the common [CaTR 5], but this list must have been compiled about two years later, for it includes men such as John Haynes who did not arrive until late in 1633.)

   Matthew Allyn seems out of place in Cambridge, as all others who arrived at about this time were from East Anglia; based on his English origin, one would expect Allyn to have resided first in Dorchester. This unusual residence for Allyn is probably tied up in some way with his relationship with WILLIAM SPENCER.

   The date of Allyn's removal to Windsor (by 1648) derives from our knowledge of his officeholding. Although he owned land in Windsor long before that date, the first evidence of his residence in Windsor is his appearance in Connecticut General Court as deputy for Windsor on 18 May 1648. That he was deputy for Windsor and not for Hartford is confirmed by noting that each of the three oldest towns in the colony was allowed four deputies at this time, and only if Allyn was representing Windsor do the numbers come out right.

   Besides being a man who was highly respected and who served society well, Matthew Allyn was a highly contentious man. We have already seen that he had lengthy disputes with his brother, and not long after he left Massachusetts he was wanted for "debt and damage" he had left behind [7 October 1641: "It is ordered, that a letter shalbe sent to Mr. Haynes & the rest of the magistrates at Connectecot, to send back the prisoner Mathewe Alleyn, or satisfy the debt & damage" (MBCR 1:339)]. Further evidence of his litigiousness may be found throughout the Connecticut court records [RPCC passim; CCCR passim].

ESTATE: On 27 June 1636 he had two acres of marsh by Goodman Greenway's [DTR 16]. He pledged to contribute to a schoolmaster based on profits from the Island [DTR 106].

   On [illegible] January 1641[/2] John Warham, Henry Woolcott, Benjamin Nuberry, John Nuberry, Mary Nuberry, Rebeccah Nuberry and Hannah Nuberry of Windsor sold to Joseph Nuberry of Windsor ten acres and a half of meadow near Podunk [WiLR 1:5-6].

   On 23 November 1670 the papers purporting to be the last will of Rev. John Warham were rejected and administration of the estate was granted to the husbands of his three daughters, Thomas Allyn, Return Strong and Mr. Stodder of Northampton. These three men were to order the estate, preserve it from waste, and see that it supported the widow during her lifetime. The court further ruled that "what estate Mrs. Warham had before marriage with Mr. Warham shall remain at her own dispose" [Manwaring 1:247].

   The inventory of the estate of Rev. John Warham was taken 30 April 1670 and totalled £1239 10s., including £687 in real estate: "his dwelling house, outhousing, and land about it of meadow and swamps and upland estimated thirty-three acres and ½," £250; "in the great meadow eighteen acres," £100; "of woodland westerly of the mill fifty-seven acres," £25; "west of that thirty acres," £3; "fifteen acres near to that," £3; "the house bought of late of Peter Brown near the mill," £20; "the mill and land about it three acres," £220; land that was Mr. Branker's: "in the great meadow," £25; "in the little meadow two acres [quarter?]," £11; and "east side the great river, 20 rods in breadth, in length 3 miles," 30 [Hartford PD Case #5645; Manwaring 1:247]. The inventory was incomplete and the administration was not perfected even as late as 10 March 1700[/1], when Samuel Allyn entered a bond of administration upon the estate [Hartford PD Case #5645; Manwaring 1:247].

   On 5 March 1684/5 administration on the estate of Mrs. Abigail Warham was granted to Capt. Newbery and Return Strong [Manwaring 1:374]. On 4 September 1684 the nuncupative will of Mrs. Abigail Warham was heard from four witnesses that

We the underwritten, being present with Mrs. Warham, who spent her last days in our family, she discoursing with us respecting her estate, declared that she had formerly given her cousin Miles Marwine such a multitude that if she had thousands she would not give him a penny. She did not know whether she had anything to give away. Disowned that she had any will, and said further that her cousin Miles Marwin desired that she would make over her estate to him. She did not know but that she might live to need and expend it all ... Mary the wife of Captain Newbery, and Abigail the daughter, both affirm that Mrs. Warham said to them ... that if there was anything left when the court had the consideration thereof, she had thought little Miles Marwin should have somewhat, and the other the lived with her so long, & as for her moveables that were brought into our house, Return Strong, Mary Newbery & Abigail do testify she freely gave them to us & said they should not be taken from us [Manwaring 1:374].

   The inventory of the estate of Mrs. Abigail Warham of Windsor totalled £126 14s. 6d. [Hartford PD Case #5644; Manwaring 1:374]. The court ordered that one third of the estate go to Miles Marwin Jr., two thirds of one third to Elizabeth [Marwin], and to John, Thomas, Samuel & Abigail Marwin, the remainder [Manwaring 1:374].

She died at Norwalk on 23 April 1655 [Grant 68].

   (3) Windsor 9 October 1662 Abigail (Searle) Brancker [CTVR 9; Grant 68], widow of JOHN BRANKER of Windsor [JIC 59-69]. She died at Windsor on 18 May 1684 [CTVR 56].

ASSOCIATIONS: In 1952 Donald Lines Jacobus prepared a concise account of John Warham and his immediate family [Hale, House 775-77]. In 1989 Judy Osborn published the results of extensive research in English records, leading to a presentation of four generations of ancestry for Rev. John Warham [M&JCH 12:1-26, 17:164-71]. In 1990 Myrtle S. Hyde analyzed these findings and concluded that "more avenues need to be pursued, but the basic family tree looks good" [TAG 65:121-22].

COMMENTS: Matthew Grant says of Warham's ministry:

Before this time it had been the practice to call such persons in public to stand forth and answer to questions of catechism propounded to them & to own the church covenant. And the time which Mr. Warham first began this practice was January 31 1657 and went on in the practice of it until March 19 1664, which day he declared to the church that he had met with such arguments against the practice concerning the baptizing of members' children that he could not get through at present & could not go on in practice as he had done without scruple of conscience, therefore must forebear until he had weighed arguments and advised with those that were able to give, not that he intended to cast off the practice holy, but only lay it for a time till he could be better able to answer his present scruples, for if he should act, and not of faith rom 14 would be sin to him [Grant 13].

 He further says that Mr. John Warham had four children born in Windsor [Grant 93].
