Notes
Family tradition has Jolly's middle name as "Ralph"
Jolly died in November 1913 as a result of knife wounds he suffered when he was attacked the summer before. Jolly was walking in Alabama City, near Gadsden, when he was set upon by an 18-year-old named Lester Moore. It appears that Moore had no reason for attacking Jolly other than to show off for some of his friends. Moore left Jolly for dead, but he survived another 18 months.6
