Notes
The 1900 census has 1866 as her year of immigration, but the 1910 census has 1849. The latter year is thought to be correct based on family tradition.2,3
Emma's death certificate lists her parents as Cyrus H. Young and Nancy Howser. However, Cyrus and Nancy were both both in the US and Emma's birthplace was Scotland (or, accoridng to fmaily tradition, she may have been born on the voyage to America). Further, the family tradition has it that Emma's birth mother, Lucinda Young, died soon after immigrating in 1850 and that Emma was adopted by a Luteran Minister living in Louisville. While there is no evidence that Cyrus Young was a minister, the other facts fit reasonably well and it seems likely that Cyrus and Nancy were Emma's adoptive parents.
Family tradition has it that Emma was Emma Nettie Young, daughter of Lucinda Young. Lucinda immigrated with her infant daughter in 1850, arriving at Philadelphia from Liverpool aboard the Hibernia on May 14 (passenger list available at Ancestry.com). It is said that Lucinda died soon after arriving and that Emma was adopted by a Lutheran Minister in Louisville, Kentucky.
It's not clear what Emma's middle initial was. The 1870 census seems to have "S.". The 1880 and 1900 censuses show "N.". The 1910 census has "L."
