MilitaryOn 29 Sep 1862 at Brookhaven, Francis was conscripted into the Company F of the 6th Regiment, Mississippi Volunteers. He was discharged in October of that same year because of an eye disease which left him blind in one eye and with impared vision in the other. This condition seems to have been affecting him for five years previously.

He apparently recovered and was able to rejoin the Confederate Army in 1864. In January of that year, he enlisted as a 2nd Sergeant in Company A of Power's Cavalry Regiment, a unit composed of Louisiana and Mississipi campanies. The Mississippi parts of this unit were later known as the 23rd Batallion, Mississippi Cavalry and Power's Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry.9,10
