MilitaryFred served in WW1 in the 308th Aero Squadron, organized in July 1918. This was a reconnaissance unit that flew a variety of aircraft, mostly British (including the Royal Aircraft Factory BE2e and RE8 and the De Havilland DH9). On one occasion during the war, Fred crashed into a tree and his plane was destroyed. He kept the control stick from that plane as a souvenir -- it is now in the possession of one of his grand-daughters. The 30th returned home in November 1918 aboard the RMS Mauretania (sister ship to the Lusitania).
