MilitaryJohn was a Confederate veteran. On Jun 23, 1862, John enlisted as an Artificer (responsible for repairing and maintaining the unit's equipment) in Captain Darden’s Company of the Mississippi Light Artillery. This unit was popularly called the Jefferson Artillery .
From late 1862 to 1865, the Jefferson Artillery fought in most of the battles for central Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. They were especially commended for their performance at Murfreesboro. The unit fought at Decatur, Alabama in the battles of late October, 1864 – this was the fighting that preceded the infamous burning of the city by Union forces. The Jefferson Artillery was an effective fighting unit until April 2, 1865, when they were overrun at Selma, Alabama and lost half their guns and about half their men. The remainder of the unit, including John, retreated to the vicinity of Citronelle, Alabama, where they surrendered on May 4. They were taken to Jackson, Mississippi, and paroled on May 19.11,12
