Militarybt 1862 - 1865On April 20, 1862, William enlisted in "The Mississippi Sharpshooters" -- Company E of the 7th Battalion, Mississippi Infantry. This company was formed in Clarke County, and several members of William's family joined, including his brother James.

William's service record is a bit confusing and it is difficult to determine where he was, and when. We do know that he was with the 7th in the fighting at Vicksburg where he was captured and paroled in July 1863.

Other than that time, it appears he spent the war years in various hospitals due to a disabling wound in the right hand. He seems to have been under treatment until Jul 1864, when it was determined that he could not return to his unit and was assigned to duty at a military hospital in Meridian, probably as an orderly. He was captured and paroled there in May 1865.9,10
