Donoghues of Ballinabrook, County Cork, Ireland




Patrick Donoghue (seated on the left) was a farmer in Ballinabrook, County Cork; he married Hanna Sullivan (seated next to him) about 1880. Son, Martin Donoghue, is seated on the right. Nephew, Jackie West, is standing behind Patrick.














The Donoghue home in Ballinabrook, near Mitchelstown, County Cork.
It is described on the April 6, 1901 Irish Census, as having walls of stone, brick or concrete, with a roof of perishable material such as thatch or wood. The home had three rooms and three windows in the front of the house. Additional outbuildings were a cow house, and a piggery.



The 1901 and 1911 Irish Census describe the family as follows:

  • Patrick Donoghue, head of family, Roman Catholic, cannot read or write, age 45 on last birthday (abt 1856) (in 1911 his age is 57), farmer by occupation, married, born in County Cork, speaks Irish and English.

  • Hannah Donoghue, wife, can read and write, age 40 on last birthday (abt 1861) (in 1911 her age is 54), housekeeper, married, born in Co. Cork. (The 1911 census adds that she was married for 30 years and had 7 children born alive and 7 children still living)

  • Batt Donoghue, listed as nephew, can read and write, age 21, (abt 1880), a Carpenter, not married, born in Co. Cork. ( In 1911 he is listed as a son, age unreadable, maybe 29)

  • Bridget Donoghue, daughter, can read and write, age 16 (abt 1885), farm servant, born in Co. Cork. (Bridget is not listed in 1911, she went to the U.S., married John J. Condon in Connecticut, was known as Delia; died in Milford,New Haven, Connecticut)

  • James Donoghue, son, can read and write, age 14 (abt 1887) farm laborer, born in Co. Cork. (James is listed in the 1911 census as age 22, a farmer's son. Can this be Martin?)

  • Daniel Donoghue, son, can read and write, age 12 (abt 1889) scholar, born in Co. Cork. ( In 1911 Dan is 21 years old and a carpenter)

  • Hannah (Annie) Donoghue, daughter, can read and write, age 9 (abt 1892), scholar, born in Co. Cork. (In 1911 she is 18; In 1911, she went to U.S. with brother Martin, married Thomas Finn in San Francisco, California.)

  • Ellen (Helen) Donoghue, daughter, can read and write, age 7 (born March 15, 1893), scholar, born in Co. Cork.; ( In 1911 she is listed as Ellie, age 16; she came to U.S., married John J. Riordan (see Riordan) in 1916 in San Francisco, California. Helen died in 1985 in San Jose, California.)

  • Catherine Donoghue, daughter, can not read and write, age 5 (abt 1896), born in Co. Cork.; (Catherine is not listed in 1911)

  • John (Jack) Donoghue, son, can not read and write, age 3, (abt 1898), born in Co. Cork; died October 4, 1987 in Ballinabrook. ( In 1911 John is age 12 and a scholar)

  • Michael Donoghue, son, can not read and write, age 1, (abt 1900), born in Co. Cork. ( In 1911 Michael is age 10 and a scholar)

    ADDITIONAL CHILDREN NOT LISTED ON THE 1901 or 1911 CENSUS:
  • Martin Donoghue, born about 1891 in Ballinabrook; died January 18, 1970 in Ballinabrook. He escorted sister Nora (Annie) to US in 1911. Is it possible that Martin is the James listed on the 1901 and 1911 census? Family does not remember a James but Martin was definitely part of the family.

  • Maggie Donoghue, born about 1880 in Ballinabrook. She married Stephen West of County Kerry. Her son is Jackie West (pictured above). Maggie came to the U.S. but returned to Ireland.

  • Minnie D. Donoghue, also known as Mary, born 1882 in Ballinabrook; she came to the U.S. in April, 1900. In 1902 her brother Batt listed her on his immigration record; married Patrick Oliver about 1911 in Connecticut. Minnie died in Ansonia, Connecticut.
