Former Sapulpa mayor and long time Creek County resident Bobby Lee, 71, of Sapulpa, died Tuesday at Hillcrest Medical Center (in Tulsa).
Lee was long remembered for his involvement in local government long after the Sapulpa City Council and his term as mayor in 1984.
Lee may be most remembered for his efforts in 1995 in single-handedly petitioning for a grand jury to investigate Creek County employees.
As a result of seating the grand jury, one county commissioner was forced into resigning and one county resident was indicted for first-degree murder.
"He was a man who would fight tooth and toe nail for somehting he believed in," said Pat Hobbs, Creek County court clerk.
"If more of us were like Bobby Lee this would be a better place," she said. "He was a very religious man."
Shirley Burzio, a longtime city clerk for Sapulpa, said Lee always had the Sapulpa's best interest at heart.
Burzio said Lee became a member of the Sapulpa City Council in 1978 and was re-elected in the years up to 1984 when he left eh council.
The city council elected Lee mayor in 1982, according to municipal records.
After leaving politics, Lee purchased and lived on a farm south of Kellyville.
Funeral arrangements are pending and will announced by the Smith Funeral Home.
