ETHEL LOUISE HAMMANS

From "The Sapulpa Herald," Friday, October 7, 2005

Ethel Louise Hammans passed from this life Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, in Sapulpa.

She was a Christian wife, mother, teacher, and friend to all those that knew her.

She was born in Florence, Kan. Aug. 11, 1915, where she went to school, and worked as an original Harvey Girl at the R.R. station there. She was a farm girl that worked in the field and rode a horse to and from the one room school until her sister and brothers were old enough to attend. Then she drove the team and wagon to school for all of them.

A member of the Church of Christ, she was active in Ladies Bible Study, graded mail correspondence classes, and participated in foreign missionary work. You could always count on Ethel to teach Bible School until her health failed her, in her 50's. Arthritis in her knees curtailed a lot of her activities. Still she would talk about her Lord when she had the opportunity. Even after her first stroke in July of 1993, when she had to go into nursing home care, she would go from room to room and pray for the other guests.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 49 years, John Millford; her parents; and one brother.

She is survived by her three sons John, of Lead Hill, Ark., and his wife Linda, Gail, of Sapulpa, and his wife Yvonne, Paul, of Great Bend, Kan., and his wife Karen; a sister Elsie Tittle of Florence, Kan.; and a brother Edward, of El Dorado, Calif.

She will be missed by her four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and her little red headed great-great-grandchild, that was fortunate enough to see her at The Gardens twice a week.

Funeral services for her have been set for 10 a.m. Monday in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Watson officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in the Douglas Cemetery in Douglas, Kan. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
