KELLYVILLE -- An 11-year-old Kellyville boy drowned Saturday afternoon in a pond on a farm southwest of Kellyville, authorities said.

Justin Levi Cheek jumped off a foam block, emerged once and then did not come up a second time, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Crews found his body in 15 feet of water after dragging the pond.

Cheek was swimming with two other boys.

The pond is in a wooded area, said Cpl. Joseph Blaylock of the Creek County Sheriff's Department.

KELLYVILLE YOUTH DROWNS AT RURAL POND SATURDAY
From Staff Reports

KELLYVILLE -- Creek County authorities issued a warning about the dangers of unsupervised swimming Monday following the weekend drowning of a rural Kellyville youth in a farm pond.

The victim was identified by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol as Justin Levi Cheek, 11.

Members of the Sapulpa Fire Department found his body later Saturday afternoon, said Cpl. Joe Blaylock, Creek County deputy.

Blaylock said both he and ambulance attendants waded into the water in a desperate attempt to locate the victim prior to the arrival of a rescue team and a boat from Sapulpa.

The victim was found in about 15 feet of water.

Blaylock and other law officers said the Saturday tragedy should alert all parents to the danger of swimming alone or without the attention of an adult who can respond if an emergency arises.

In this instance the victim was swimming at a rural pond with two other boys who are about the same age as the victim, Blaylock said.

The OHP said witnesses reported the victim had jumped off a foam block and then came to the surface before disappearing.
