ARTS SCHOLARSHIP SET UP IN MEMORY OF ACCIDENT VICTIM

The family of a Sapulpa High School graduate killed this week has established a scholarship fund in her memory.

Julie Brooke Osborn, 19, was killed Easter Sunday in an accident on the Turner Turnpike.

Osborn was a 2003 Sapulpa graduate who attended the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha. She was an art student.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the memorial scholarship, which will be administered through Sapulpa Arts, Executive Director Teri Naifeh said Wednesday.

Naifeh said Osborn's family plans to present one scholarship to a high school visual art student next month.

Scholarship applications are available in the high school counseling office, Naifeh said.

Donations can be mailed to Sapulpa Arts at 101 E. Dewey Ave., Sapulpa, OK 74066. Checks should be made to Sapulpa Arts and marked for the Osborn scholarship fund.

Sapulpa Arts will collect and distribute the funds to a recipient of the Osborn family's choosing, Naifeh said. The family plans to offer the memorial scholarship annually.

Sapulpa Arts is a non-profit organizaton under the umbrella of the Sapulpa Chamber Foundation.

Funeral services for Osborn will be held at 2 p.m. today at Angus Acres Baptist Church at 4401 S. 129th W. Ave.

Jason Howard, 19, of Kellyville, a passenger in Osborn's vehicle, was treated at the scene for arm injuries and released.

When Steve Ham heard that his former student, Julia Osborn, had been killed in an automobile accident earlier this month, he wanted to do something to honor her memory.

So Ham and some of his friends, who make up the Jambalaya Jazz Band, will host a benefit concert from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 26 at Hickory House Barbecue in Sapulpa.

The Jambalaya Jazz Band -- which performed during last year's Royal Jazz Festival in Sapulpa -- features Ham, Mike Bennett, Tony Yohe, Mike Chittom and Bill Crosby.

Osborn, 19, was involved in a fatal accident on the Turner Turnpike April 11.

She was a 2003 Sapulpa graduate who attended the University of Science and Arts of Okahoma in Chickasha.

As a middle school student, Osborn played the bass clarinet in the Allen-Bowden school band, which Ham directs.

Ham said Wednesday that he rememberd Osborn as an outstanding student.

"She was a hoot," Ham said. "She was just a great, fun kid. She was really a sweetheart."

Ham said when he heard about the accident and the scholarship fund that had been established in Osborn's honor, "I just thought, what can I do for these folks?"

Ham said Hickory House Barbecue will donate 10 percent of the restaurant's proceeds during the two-hour show to the scholarship fund. Donations to the fund also will be accepted.

Osborn's family established the memorial scholarship fund to be collected and distributed through Sapulpa Arts.

Sapulpa Arts Executive Director Teri Naifeh said earlier the Osborn family would award a scholarship to a high school visual arts student during May's awards assmebly.

Scholarship applications are available in the high school counseling office, Naifeh said.

As of Wednesday, $1,030 had been given to the scholarship fund.
