MAMIE ELOIS BANKS

Mamie Elois Banks

Mamie Elois Banks was born in Fayetteville, Ark. on June 15, 1909. She was one of eight children born to Patrick and Margaret Ella Cox. Her sisters were Mona, Leita, Lillian and Aileene. Her brothers were Patrick, Elmer and Thomas. Mamie was the last surviving child.

Shortly after Mamie was born, the family moved to Claremore, where she grew up and married Mr. Engle and had her first son, Frank. She remarried in 1927 to James Arthur Banks. They moved to Texas and had four children: Eugene, Barbara, Joan and James. In 1940 the family moved to Wenachee, Wash., where they lived until moving to Santa Ana, Calif. in 1949.

While they lived in Santa Ana, most of their grandchildren were born. Frank's daughter Marie Engle; Eugene's children Everett, John Henry, Rosemary, William and Jackie Banks; Barbara's children Patty Rogers, Gail, Michael and Maureen Gordon; Joan's children Margaret, Barbara, Donald and James, and James' children, James and Sally Banks.

When her husband James passed away in 1957, she did what she had always done so well for her family and became a live-in caregiver to four different families over the next 20 years.

In 1980 she moved to Orange, where she lived with her sister Leita for a year before moving in with her grandchildren Margaret and Danny Warren in Fountain Valley. Her next big career started there with the birth of their son, Charles, her great-grandson, who Mamie helped raise with all the love and tender care anyone could imagine. The family moved to Long Beach where they lived together for the next 16 years.

At the age of 89, Mamie decided it was time to move to an assisted living facility. She moved to Casa Whittier in 1999, where she lived until failing health and a broken hip led her to Whittier Hills Convalescent facility, where she passed away on Dec. 22, 2003.

Joan Rouan, her daugher, was her primary caregiver over many years and dedicated herself to Mamie's health and happiness.

Mamie is survived by three of her children: Frank Engle and his wife, Irene, of Vernal, Utah, Joan Rouan and her husband, Don, of LaMirada, Calif., and James Banks and his wife, Sharon, of Sapulpa; one daughter-in-law, Mary Banks, of Disney; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The family is going to honor her request on April 24, 2004 at 11 a.m. with a memorial service at the cemetery. After the service there will be a memorial luncheon at Ryan's Steakhouse Buffet on Memorial Drive one block south of 71st Street. GEORGE BECK
From "The Sapulpa Herald," May 20, 2002

George Beck

George Beck of Sapulpa died Monday, May 13, 2002 at St. John Sapulpa at the age of 95.

Beck was born Feb. 5, 1907 in Fort Scott, Kan. He was married to Opal Foster Beck.

He was a retired machinist, farmer and stockman and had lived in this area most all of his life.

He was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Beck was a proud, strong committed man and he did not take responsibility lightly, and his word or handshake was better than any signed piece of paper.

Family members offered many times to do more for them but he felt he needed to do all he could or he would lose the ability.

Mr. Beck was an outdoor man and spent most of the days outside with the calves and in his shop until his wife had a stroke.

After she left the rehab center he took over her entire care. He drove until the day of his heart attack, May 3, and took care of all their personal business. His mind stayed sharp until he died.

He was a good neighbor and had good neighbors. He was respected by all who knew him and was loved deeply by us.

He never expected anything but appreciated everything offered or done for them. Mr. Beck rests in the arms of Jesus and is finally free of the pain he suffered with for several years. He will be missed.

Mr. Beck was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Ester, son George Beck, Jr., grandson Larry Beck and brother Ralph Beck.

Survivors are his wife Opal Beck; step-children Pat Langston of Sapulpa, Norma Myers of Sand Springs, Bill Robertson of Sapulpa and Harold Robertson of McAlester; grandson Wayne Beck of Sand Springs; many step grandchildren; and sister Helen Bass of Weir, Kan.

Funeral services for Mr. Beck have been set for 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2002 in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Ballard and the Rev. Howard Butler officiating.

Interment will follow in the Green Hill Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home.
