BRISTOW - OK 66

This town began in 1897 as a trading post catering to the Creek Indians. The post office was established the following year, but the town did not exist until the Frisco railroad arrived in 1901. From 1916 until 1922 petroleum development in the area created an oil boom. During the 1940s travelers found it well supplied with accomodations. Between Bristow and Stroud, unseen by motorists, there is an undergraound "tank farm," a depleted gas field into which the El Paso Natural Gas Co. injects surplus gas for storage during periods of low consumption.
