"CUSHING COUPLE BRUTALLY MURDERED"
From the "News Derrick Journal," Mannford, Oklahoma, January 4, 1984

Law enforcement authorities continue to investigate the murder of two Cushing residents. Cushing Police Chief Don Gourley identified the two as Mark Thomas Vinson, age 23, and Tracy L. Mackey, 21.

Their bodies were discovered, according to the police report, "Friday night about 7:30 at the Vinson residence," located on the old Kerr McGee Road about one-quarter mile west of Linwood.

Gourley stated that both were shot. The caliber of the weapon, how many times they were shot and the condition they were in when discovered have not been revealed as of yet by authorities.

"The bodies were taken to the medical examiner's office in Oklahoma City," noted the police chief.

Investigators expect to learn in the next few days from the medical examiner's office as much evidence as possible concerning the deaths.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents Rusty Featherstone and Perry Unruh were involved in the case Friday evening.

"The OSBI was called in and brought two agents and two crime specialists," noted Gourley.

Gourley, along with Cushing Police Detective Dale Howard and the OSBI officials, were at the scene most of the evening and early morning hours of Saturday.

During the early part of their nighttime investigation, a number of individuals went in and out of the isolated wooden structure home.

While this was occuring, more Cushing police were called out to secure the crime scene. Some Payne County Deputies and State Trooper Dennis Allen were also at the site.

Authorities made sure that there was someone at the murder site all the time until 9:50 Saturday morning when officials stated they had obtained all the information available from the location.

Featherstone, who is in charge of the investigation, and Unruh, along with Gourley and Howard, continued their task Saturday of finding out who committed the murders. The Cushing Police station was a busy place as a host of people were questioned by law enforcement officials.

Paul Renfro, the communications officer for the OSBI, said more information on the case may be forthcoming in the next few days.

"The agents are questioning a lot of people," he noted.

Renfro also verified that the case is being worked as "a double homicide." He talked with the agents who discounted any other angles to the murders.

Renfro did comment Saturday afternoon on a number of rumors that had been heard around Cushing.

"The Mackey girl (Tracy) apparently walked in on an incident at the Vinson residence. Vinson was a sound man for a local band (The "Hard Luck Band") and his band was going to perform somplace tonight (Saturday.)

"The Mackey girl went there apparently to get tickets and was apparently at the wrong place at the wrong time," said Renfro.

Renfro said "the two were definitely not shot with a shotgun," but would not identify the exact weapon. The public relations head stated that "the agents are not comfortable releasing where or how many times the two were struck."

Renfro added that "the agents know so little about what occurred that we want to protect the information they know."

Unconfirmed rumors flew around Cushing all day Saturday concerning the crime scene when officials arrived Friday evening. Rumors that the victims' hands were tied when discovered were not confirmed by authorities involved in the case.

Officers would not release the name of the person who first discovered the victims, but it is believed to be a close friend of Vinson's.

As of now, what Featherstone termed as "a preliminary investigation" is continuing to see what really occurred at the secluded Cushing house Friday evening.

Mark Vinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Vinson of Cushing, according to friends of the family, was a self-employed oilfield "pumper." He was a 1978 graduate of Cushing High School.

Tracy Mackey, the daughter of Don Mackey of Cushing and Marie Mackey of Santa Cruz, California, was born January 28, 1962, in Grenada, Texas. She was employed at McDonald's in Cushing where she was an assistant manager. She had been with the firm since June of 1983, according to owner-manager Gary Wilson.

Funeral services for both the victims are under the direction of the Fairley-Hackler Funeral Home of Cushing. Their obits are on page two of this edition.
