REVOLUTIONARY WAR INFORMATION

DESCRIPTION OF MILITARY UNIFORM

Morris Town 6th July 1793 ---

Agreeable to the orders of his Excellency the Commander in Chief dated the 10th of June last I have determined upon the following uniform for the brigade of Artillery in the Militia of the state of New Jersey --

Caps -- To be cocked in a military manner: a black plume with a red top -- the plume to rise six inches above the brim of the hat: yellow buttons and loop --

Stocks -- Black leather, highly polished

Coats -- Dark blue cloth, with scarlet lappells, cape and cuffs. The coat to reach two inches below the knee band: scarlet lining and plain yellow buttons. The cuffs to be round having three buttons on each, and four buttons on each pocket-flap: The lappells, cuffs, and cape to be each three inches wide. the skirts to be turned up and fastened with hooks and eyes, having a blue heart one and a half inch in length on each corner, a shoulder strap, blue edged with red on each shoulder.

Vest -- White with yellow buttons, three buttons on each pocket flap, short skirts to the jacket --

Breeches -- White, with yellow buttons to be made light spatterdashes -- White linnen with small black leather buttons five inches above the knee band to set tight to the leg, a black knee band and set tight to the leg: a black knee band to buckle over them above the calf of the leg --

Cockades -- of black leather highly polished of three thicknesses all to be round, and indented at the outer edge into small points the first three inches in diameter the second two and a half and two thirds inches -- the loop of the hat to go through the center of the whole and the cockade to be worn half its width above the rim of the hat --

Epaulets -- The captains to wear a gold epaulett on the right shoulder and the subalterns the same on the left: the sergeants to wear one of yellow silk on the right and the corporals the same on the left --

Swords -- The officers to wear swords of the sabre form -- length of the blade 2 1/2 feet, the non-commissioned officer to have their 3 feet all to have yellow mountings and to be slung over the right shoulder in a white leather belt three inches wide, officers, non-commissioned officers and matrosses to have each a handsome cartouche cap to contein 18 rounds slung in a similar belt over the left shoulder: the commissioned officers to be armed with fusses, the non-commissioned officers and matrosses with light muskets the barrels of which shall be three feet long -- the whole to carry bayonets to fix occasionally and also white leather straps to sling them when necessary.
