REV WAR--GEN. ORDERS

REVOLUTIONARY WAR INFORMATION

GENERAL ORDERS, OCTOBER 15th, 1793

It is with pain that the Commander in Chief informs the militia that the malignant fever raging at Philadelphia has prevented Baron Stubens military system of discipline being handed to them before this: it was in great forwardness the 10th of September directed by law and to procure a painter to execute the same, the high generals will therefore apply to him for the number they may want for the respective regiments of their brigade -- the adjutant general will previously acquaint the brigadiers of what price the same can be expected and it is expected the money necessary to purchase the colors for the brigade will be forwarded with the orders of the brigadier of the same. No standards or colors differing from the ground device or motto of those ordered are to be unfurled on the field or on parade.

The Commander in Chief cannot refrain expressing his surprise in hearing that several of the uniform troops and companies have deviated from the dress they have been ordered to wear therefore orders that no alteration in fashion cut button, button holes, facing belts, hat, and cap, or in any stance whatever will be permitted and those who have done contrary to the orders given respecting dress will immediately alter them agreeable to the orders alluded to the indulgence given in the last orders to certain corps as to their uniform including the two companies and Artillery in Essex County is continued --
