BOBBY GENE SANCO
From "The Sapulpa Herald," Monday, June 5, 1995

TWO AREA RESIDENTS DIE IN PLANE CRASH
By Lorrie J. Quinnelly
Herald Staff Writer

Phil Cornelius and Bobby Sanco were best friends, and had been for many years.

Cornelius, a commercial pilot for USAir and a veteran pilot in the U.S. Air Force, and Sanco, a self-employed machinist, worked together on lots of projects. Both of them liked airplanes, and, in fact, Sanco built and rebuilt the parts for an airplane the Cornelius constructed.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Cornelius decided he'd fly to an air show in Utah. At the last minute, he called his buddy Sanco, and the two loaded up the Light EZ they'd worked on together and headed to the show.

Neither had any way of knowing that on the route home May 29, they would go down in rough weather near Four Corners, N.M., and Cornelius, 47, and Sanco, 59, would die together in the plane they built.

Sanco's son, Forrest Sanco of Fort Worth, Texas, said his dad and Cornelius, who piloted the plane, flew over the Grand Canyon and landed in Alburquerque that day. He said they were given clear weather clearance all the way to Tucumcari, N.M.

"About 50 miles east of Albuquerque, they radioed the airport at Moriarty (New Mexico) that weather conditions were not what they had been led to believe," the younger Sanco said. "The ceilings were about 1,000 feet and there was a light rain. They were told they had a 10-mile visibility and they didn't.

"That was the last radio contact anyone had from them."

Sanco said the plane carrying his dad and his dad's best friend went down about 3 p.m. on Memorial Day. They were found in Four Corners, just a few miles from the location of their last radio contact, he said.

Forrest Sanco said the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the accident, but he suspects they will simply find that the crash was a result of bad weather conditions.

"Phil was a commercial pilot; he was a good pilot," Sanco said. "I doubt they'll find anything wrong with the plane at all.

"I don't know whether the plane was struck by lightning or hit a wind sheer or what, but I think that's what they'll find."

Sanco said he is well aware of the fluctuations in weather conditions and how quickly they can change.

"A big storm can blow up in 15 minutes," he said. "I've lived in Texas and Oklahoma long enough to know that."

The families of Cornelius and Sanco are unsure when the FFA investigation will be complete.

IN MEMORY OF MICK SIMMONS
11-22-51 to 8-29-03

If tears could build a stairway
And memories were a lane,
We would walk right up to Heaven
And bring you back again.

No farewell words were spoken,
No time to say goodbye;
You were gone before we knew it
And only God knows why.

Our hearts still ache in sadness
And secret tears still flow,
What it meant to lose you
No one can ever know.

Miss you Always,
Love you Forever

From "The Jenks Journal," March 30, 1972

Thirty-six years ago, April 23 (1936), A. J. Speers' untimely death shocked the Jenks area. He had been elected to the Board of Education less than one month earlier; he had pioneered the oil fields of this section of Oklahoma and had extended his operations into Texas with success.

Sunday at the local Methodist church, Mrs. Speers will commemorate his memory by having placed an Easter flower arrangement in the chancel center.

Mrs. Speers asked Mrs. Mary Nussbaum, her personal friend of more than fifty years, to coordinate and restore the memory of Mr. Speers, who loved the Jenks Methodist church, with the fitting Easter tribute. Mrs. Olgar McDonald, who is known for flower arranging artistry, made the arrangement."
