JAMES WILLIAM VAN HORN

JAMES WILLIAM VAN HORN, son of George Lafayette, son of John C. Van Horne, was born on September 18 1893 in Fontana, Miami County, Kansas, and died on January 9, 1968 in St. Louis, Misouri.

James William Van Horn married (1)Ruhama (Rubaina) Alice Tyrell, daughter of Madison Tyrell and Sarah Henness, on December 18, 1920, in Osawatomie, Miami County, Kansas. John William Van Horn married (2) Emma Lelia Banks, daughter of Willis Banks and Mary ?, on June 11, 1938.

Children of James William Van Horn and Ruhama Alice Tyrell are:

1. John Tyrell Van Horn

2. James William Van Horn, Jr., who married Rosalie Beilhimer.


OBITUARY FOR JAMES WILLIAM VAN HORN:

James William Van Horn, 74, Osawatomie, died Jan. 9, 1968, in the Missouri Pacific Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Sept. 18, 1893 in Fontana, the son of George and Margaret Ann Van Horn.

: During World War 1, he served in the Army. Upon returning from the service, he made his home in Osawatomie and was employed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

December 18, 1920, he was married to Ruhama Alice Tyrell, who died April 9, 1929, leaving two sons, Jack Tyrell and James William Van Horn, Jr. June 11, 1938, he was married to Emma L. Banks, who survives him.

Mr. Van Horn was a member of the Methodist Church, the Osage Valley Barracks of World War 1, and of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons, Jack of Independence, and James Jr. of Kansas City and one sister, Mamie Mallory of Ottawa and five grandchildren.

OBITUARY FOR EMMA LELIA BANKS:

Services were held Monday for Emma Lelia Van Horn in Birchard Funeral Home. Mrs. Van Horn died Friday in the Osawatomie Rest Home. She was 76.

Born near Lane, Feb. 19, 1896, she was the daughter of Willis M. and Mary L. Banks. She grew up in the Lane community and attended Glen and Chestnut Grove schools. She moved to Osawatomie in 1920 where she worked at Harris Grocery Store. During the 1940's, she worked at Sunflower Ordinance Plant in De Soto.

She was married to James William Van Horn of Osawatomie on June 11, 1938. He preceded his wife in death.

Mrs. Van Horn was a member of the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a past noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors include a sister, Lottie Burnett, Osawatomie; a brother, John Banks, Lane; two step-sons, Jack T. Van Horn, Independence, Mo., and James W. Van Horn, Kansas City, Kan.; and five step-grandchildren.

The Rev. Clayton Puittman officiated at the services. Mrs. Hugh Phares played organ selections. Pallbearers were Edwin Cook, Ralph Platz, Clyde Hammond, Vernon Van Horn, Raymond Mathia, and Chester Pennock. Burial was in the Elmdale Cemetery.
