JOHN C. VAN HORNE

JOHN C. VAN HORNE was born August 30, 1808, in Oxford Township, Butler County, Ohio, and died on April 19, 1860, in Lykins County (now Miami County) Kansas.

John C. Van Horne married Malinda (sometimes spelled "Melinda") Hinton in 1842 in Butler County, Ohio. (This information according to Millicent Price, daughter of Winona Lee Van Horn.)

John C. Van Horne, wife Melinda, John Calvin, Wm. Oliver & Joseph Lorenzo moved to Missouri between November 1847 & January, 1849.

Settled in Lykins County, Kansas, Stanton Township, in 1854.

1856 - 1855 - Thirty four families listed as "pioneers" in Lykins County, KS (now named Miami County). John C. Van Horne & his family are named on this list.

4-19-1860 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF JOHN C. VAN HORNE - "Wife mentioned, but not by name, 6 children, John Calvin mentioned by name" - John signed his mark.

John C. Van Horne was buried in Indianapolis Cemetery, Osawatomie, Miami County, Kansas. Gravestone inscription "Rest In Peace"; engraving of broken candle. Indianapolis Cemetery is 2 and 1/2 miles Northwest of Osawatomie near the Indianapolis School.


From a personal letter to Millicent Ann Price-Schreiber (daughter of Winona Lee Van Horn) from Fred L. Lee, Past President of the Westport Historical Society, Westport, Station, Kansas City, Missouri. It reads in part:

"Mention of Van Horn is also found in Carrie Whitney's KANSAS CITY, MO.; ITS HISTORY AND PEOPLE, 1800-1908 (pp. 5-12 with information on his family and children on page 12).

"Mention of a John Van Horn(e) is found in Louise Barry's THE BEGINNING OF THE WEST: ANNALS OF THE KANSAS GATEWAY TO THE MAERICAN WEST, 1540-1854. Such states he was employed by the Indian Department in "Kansas" in 1839 at the Ft. Leavenworth Agency as an interpreter for the Kansa Indians; in 1851 was similarly employed by the Indian Department as an interpreter for the Sac and Fox Indians; in 1852 was employed by the Indian Department as a gunsmith at the Sac and Fox Agency. Positions held for either (so this source states) for part of a year or for the full year."
