He was also wanted for the embezzlement of $85 from the Massachusetts Total Abstinence Society, and for several other crimes.³⁴
• March 7, 1887, W. Elliot Woodward left Boston as a member of the Raymond-Whitcomb excursion party. "The trip out of Boston was a very pleasant one." He passed through Cincinnati and Chattanooga. "At Birmingham, a stop was made sufficiently long to enable the travelers to take a view of that remarkable town. When the train arrived at Tuskaloosa the citizens came out in carriages in which they drove the visitors about town, showing them the points of interest." Taking the Queen and Crescent Railroad, he arrived in New Orleans on 13 Mar 1887. and left on 15 Mar 1887. He arrived in Galveston at 9:30 the morning of 16 Mar 1887, where he remained until about 3 p.m. From there, he traveled through San Antonio, El Paso, the Pyramids of Cholula and Mexico City.^35,36
• He was on January 17, 1888 elected an honorary member of the Kansas State Historical Society.³⁷

When a young man, he started out as a lecturer on mnemonics and met with remarkable success. In 1848, he came to Boston and engaged in the drug business in Roxbury, and retired only a few years ago. He was the best known coin dealer in the country and his series of coin catalogues is to be found in every large public library. He was deeply interested in the history of New England, and published reprints of many of the early publications, notably, the records of the trials of the witches at Salem in 1772 [sic], Cotton Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World," Robert Calef's "More Wonders," Hubbard's "Indian Wars," "News from New England," and "Founders of New England." He also published "Records of Witchcraft in New England and Elsewhere," by Samuel Drake. He was at one time a large real estate operator, and once owned the famous Governor Shirley house of Roxbury. He was for two years a member of the Common Council, and served on the committee that had charge of the street changes in the burnt district after the great fire of 1872.
• He was buried on January 8, 1892 in Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, Buried about 8 ft. to 15 ft. in front of headstone, and 3 ft to 5 ft to right. Lot 1543 Arethusa Path.
  Also on the list of gravesite owners are Grace G. Piper, bur. 28 June 1862, William H. Piper, buried 15 Jan 1866, and Mary A. Piper, bur. 25 July 1873. These gravesites are listed as 'Not located.⁴⁰'
