- John H. Gardner was born on 15 March 1842.1
- John H. Gardner was a millman at Brooks, Waldo County, Maine.1
- On the breaking out of the Rebellion he enlisted in Co. F, Fourth Regt., Maine Vols., June 15, 1861. Was in the Bull Run battles, Chantilly, and the siege of Yorktown ; was taken prisoner at Gettysburg, July 2 ; was confined on Belle Isle, Richmond, Va., about three months ; bought his parole with five dollars that had escaped the notice of the prison officers. He was placed in camp at Annapolis, Md., from which place he received a furlough for thirty days to come home. On returning to camp he was exchanged and ordered to the front ; took part in the Battle of Cold Harbor. Shortly after, on June 15, 1861, his time expired, having served three years. In 1867, he, with others, bought mills in Waltham, where they since lived.2
