Robert Safford Hale wrote: "Mr. William Hale, in a letter to me of 13 Apr 1875, quotes Mrs. Colburn as saying in an old letter that Lucia married a Mr. Van Amburgh, but on the whole I give credit rather to the statement of Mrs. Marsh (in letter of W. T. Herrick to me of 13 Nov 1874) that she was engaged, her wedding day fixed and close at hand, and the cake made, when she was taken suddenly ill and died.1
