Two hardback reprints about the Bluegrass State are William C. Kozee's
EARLY FAMILIES OF EASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN KENTUCKY AND THEIR DESCENDANTS and
PIONEER FAMILIES OF EASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN KENTUCKY. Both volumes pertain to
the Big Sandy Valley region, the area of Kentucky that was embraced originally
by the counties of Clay, Floyd, Greenup, and Knox. Created from all or part of
those four are present-day counties such as Breathitt, Carter, Harlan, Johnson,
Laurel, Lawrence, Morgan, Perry, Pike, and Whitley.
EARLY FAMILIES (886 pages, map, illustrations of family coats of arms, indexed, item order #3265, $48.50) is a massive compilation of approximately 122 genealogies. The family histories refer to approximately 12,000 individuals and encompass a time period stretching from the late eighteenth century through the middle of the twentieth century. Starting with the progenitor of the Kentucky line, many of the genealogies show descent through seven generations; some include as many as 400 descendants and most include more than a hundred. Data for the genealogies came from public records and information supplied by descendants. Samples of surnames whose genealogies are traced include AUXLER, BRACK, DILS, DYSART, EVERMAN, FLAUGHER, FUSON, FUQUA, GEE, HACKWORTH, HAGER, HOCKADAY, KEESEE, KIBBEY, OSENTON, POGUE, RATLIFF, REDWINE, SALYER, SWETNAM, THEOBOLD, VAN HOOSE, WARNOCK, WILHOIT, and WITTEN.
Instead of being a compilation of genealogies, PIONEER FAMILIES (272 pages, names in lists usually arranged alphabetically, item order #3270, $30) is primarily a collection of genealogical data, especially marriage records. Kozee begins this volume with a brief history of the region. Most of the chapters concern specific counties. Generally, the information furnishes details about the boundary and establishment of each county, a synopsis of the county's earliest court records, a list of pioneer families gleaned from various tax lists and the 1810 federal census, and marriage records. The final chapters pertain to Kentucky legislators and names of participants in various wars. Over all, the material refers to approximately 15,000 persons.

County, NC, in the 1800s. Their son John BRIGHT, who is Johannes's ancestor,
moved to Knox County, KY, before 1820.
Johannes also seeks information on John HOBBES, born about 1523 in England,
and on
Jane UNDERWOOD, who married Henry FLOWERS in 1699. Her parents were
Thomas and Dinah UNDERWOOD.
