Now we share information from another old copy of the Shelby County, Texas, newspaper. These items appear in the 30 April 1936 issue of the Center Daily News, published in Center, Texas. (Surnames are capitalized for emphasis. Some punctuation may be changed for clarity.)

Edited by Miss Jennie IVEY, the “Society” column contained data about local club meetings, as well as various activities of county residents.

“The Center Music Study Club met Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in the home of Mrs. S. H. SANDERS, with Mrs. Weldon SANDERS as co-hostess...” Mrs. C. C. LOCKE gave the introduction for the program on “Our Lighter Musical Moments.”

Mrs. F. L. MOFFETT presented a paper on composers [John Philip} Sousa, Victor Herbert, [Reginald] DeKoven, and Irvin (sic) Berlin.

Perry BRITTAIN sang a song written by Berlin.

Mrs. Charles M. BURNETT played a piano solo.

Mrs. Y. W. ROGERS, Mrs. S. H. SANDERS, and Jane LOCKE gave separate “Voice” performances.

Mesdames JOHNSON, PURINGTON, and STEELE were guests.

“...descriptions of the recent trip to the State Federation meet in Fort Worth were given by various ladies who attended—Mesdames BURNETT, MARTIN, ADAMS, and PAYNE.

The Lantana Garden Club met in the Methodist Church parlor, Friday, April 24, with Mrs. John WINDHAM as leader.” WINDHAM gave a demonstration on flower arrangements.

     E. C. GUNNELS is a business visitor in Shreveport today.

Mrs. Smith BRITTAIN of San Augustine visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John CARROLL, Tuesday.

Mrs. Minnie BUCKINGHAM of Dallas is the guest of relatives in Center this week.

Mrs. Jas. (sic) LANGHORNE of Timpson, Mrs. Florence BREED of St. Louis, and R. C. ORTEGA of San Antonio, were in Center Wednesday in the interests of the State and National Anti-Tubercular Associations. Mr. Ortega is director of the Mexican health services {?of?—word is cut out of this particular copy of the newspaper], and Mrs. Breed is field representative of the National Organization....”

Details about Shelby County residents appear in the section concerning news in Ballard. “Mr. and Mrs. Royce WILSON, Mrs. E. P. BOLES and son, Wilma (sic) of Neuville, were visitors in our community Saturday. Misses Bertha and Mozelle PERMENTER accompanied them.

Mr. and Mrs. Eddie BAILEY were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Levi TAMPLIN.

Miss Jean CLINE of Longstreet, La., visited her parents this week.

Miss Burt Marie PERMENTER and Merlend BOLES have the measles.

Aunt Laura BATES is still very low.”

As usual, this issue of the newspaper carried advertisements. For example, Charles CADE, agent for the Texas newspaper, HOUSTON CHRONICLE, placed an ad in which he gave his phone number so interested subscribers could contact him.

Mrs. Nonie BALDWIN, 309 Houston Street, placed an ad to offer to rent “Close to town, two cool, clean house-keeping rooms or one or two cool bed-rooms.”
