Evelyn Guluka is searching for information about the ancestors and descendants of Jefferson Davis MARSHALL of Upshur County, Texas. Anyone with information may e-mail her at [email protected].

Are you looking for an exciting gift for the family genealogist? If you are, you may want to consider getting a copy of THE GUIDE TO FAMILYSEARCH ONLINE by James L. Tanner. Sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon), FamilySearch is now one of the largest and most important genealogical resources on the Internet. It, therefore, offers a broad spectrum of valuable research data on its various websites, which may seem like a maze at first glance. However, Tanner’s detailed instructions take readers step-by-step through the content and organization of all the current sites.

Three of the four sections of this handy volume contain up-to-date information on FamilySearch.org (which includes data about Wiki.FamilySearch.org and Forums.FamilySearch.org), Indexing.FamilySearch.org, and New.FamilySearch.org. Section four deals with websites not yet incorporated into the main site. These include FamilySearch.org on Facebook and Twitter, Film.FamilySearch.org (for ordering microfilm to be used at a LDS Family History Center), the Family History Center Portal, FamilySearch Developer Network, FamilySearch Consultants’ Page, and FamilySearch Remote Control Agent.

Heavily illustrated with screen-shots, the publication makes it easy for researchers to put into practice what they just learned after reading the book. Even if you are already familiar with these sites, chances are good that you will find insights into features and data that you did not previously know. Useful to both beginning and experienced genealogists, THE GUIDE TO FAMILYSEARCH ONLINE will make a welcomed addition to personal as well as public libraries.

Displaying an attractive cover, the 361-page softbound work includes a preface, numerous illustrations, an epilogue, a glossary of genealogy and computer usage terms, footnotes, and an index. To the book’s price of $39.95, buyers should add handling charges of $4.90 for one book and $2.50 for each additional copy. Checks or money orders may be mailed to Family Roots Publishing Company, LLC, P. O. Box 830, Bountiful, Utah 84011-0830 (phone 801-992-3705; fax 815-642-0103). Online credit card purchases may be made at [email protected]. The volume is also available in a PDF version download for $24.95 at www.familyrootspublishing.com.

Two interesting items containing quite a bit of genealogical information can be found in the January 1995 (Volume II, No. 1) issue of the Southern New Mexico Historical Review. On pages 9-16, J. Henry Gustafson tells the story of his family in the article, “Swedish in New Mexico! The Gustafsons of Las Cruces.” He begins with his parents’ immigration from Sweden to the Great Plains and follows their story through their move to the American Southwest.

The second article pertains to a house in Las Cruces after the end of the American Civil War: “Early Owners of the Nestor Armijo Home, Part II: Benjamin Harrover and John D Barncastle.” Written by John B. Colligan, it appears on pages 41-45.
