On 8-11 May 2013, the National Genealogical Society will hold its annual family history conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Local host societies will be the Centennial Las Vegas Genealogy Society, the Clark County, Nevada Genealogical Society, the Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada, the Las Vegas FamilySearch Library, the Nevada African American Genealogy Society, and the Nevada State Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Persons attending can choose from several hundred sessions whose topics range from migration, immigration, and ethnic research to DNA, the law, and methodology to research in specific places like California and New York. Presenters will include more than 100 experienced and professional genealogists. In addition to the programs, attendees will be able to choose from several Las Vegas area tours and special meal events.
Discounted early bird conference registration ends on 19 March 2013. Pre-registration will end on 22 April 2013, which is also the deadline for purchasing tickets for any tours or social events since they cannot be bought on site. Although obituaries and death notices are usually associated with newspapers, they can sometimes be found in other publications, especially periodicals pertaining to a profession or hobby. For example, individuals who had a talent for or an interest in “witching” to locate water may have data published about their death in The American Society of Dowsers Quarterly Digest. The digest contains information about two deceased dowsers on pages 10-11 of the Fall 2012 (Vol. 52, No. 2) issue.
Below are some selected items found on page 18, column 2, of the Baptist Standard (vol. 23, no. 3), published in Dallas, Texas, on 19 January 1911. (In the material, surnames are capitalized for emphasis; spelling may sometimes be changed or punctuation may be added for clarity; current abbreviations for states are used.)
“Rev. E. M. DODD of Paducah has declined a call to 22nd and Walnut Church, of Louisville....
Rev. Luther LITTLE begins a meeting at Tulsa, OK, this week with Pastor W. T. SCOTT.
Rev. R. F. TREDWAY of Mansfield, LA, began a meeting, January 8th, with Pastor BARTON at West Point, MS.
Dr. E. F. WRIGHT of Nevada, MO, with Singer Rober[t] JOLLY, began a meeting at Claremore, OK, January 8th with Pastor A. P. STONE.
Rev. A. N. HALL began a meeting at Muskogee, OK, January 8th, doing his own preaching to his church.
Dr. Luther LITTLE goes to Franklin, KY, in February to hold a meeting.
Dr. George BUTLER of Austin, with Singer Robert JOLLY, begins a meeting with Pastor D. B. SMITH, at Corpus Christi, January 22nd....”
p. 14, col. 1 – Rev. J. T. GILLESPIE goes from Canadian to Goodnight. He becomes pastor at Goodnight for half time and for the remainder of his time, he will serve as evangelist of the Education Board....
p. 22, cols. 2-3 – “I have been called to the pastorate of Archer City church for one-half time. Have been on the field one month. J. J. HAWKINS.”
