If some of your ancestors came from the Old Dominion, you may be interested in two reprints that are now available. Both were written by authors whose names will be familiar to experienced genealogists.
Originally published in 1877, HISTORY OF ST. MARK’S PARISH, CULPEPER COUNTY, VIRGINIA, WITH NOTES OF OLD CHURCHES AND OLD FAMILIES by Rev. Philip Slaughter presents the story of St. Mark’s Parish, which was established in 1730—eighteen years prior to the creation of Culpeper County in 1748. During the colonial era, the Church of England (Episcopal) parish and the county had the same boundaries.
Background material makes up approximately half of Slaughter’s book. Naturally, he discusses the history of St. Mark’s from its formation to 1876. Included is information concerning St. Thomas and Bromfield parishes, which were cut off from St. Mark’s. In the narrative, Slaughter incorporates details from the vestry minutes and furnishes data about some of the pastors.
In addition, he furnishes several historical “excursions.” The topics pertain to the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe, a tale that refers to Governor Alexander Spotswood’s expedition over the mountains, and John Fontaine’s journal about the “adventure”; the Germanna settlement and the early German colonists who lived in the area; the diary of Captain Philip Slaughter; Lewis Littlepage; and the tobacco plant.
Genealogies of some of the early vestrymen and communicants of St. Mark’s compose the second part of the work.
