January is not too early to begin making plans to attend a family reunion. If you have an ANSLEY line, you will look forward to the thirty-sixth annual gathering of the Ansley Family Association. Instead of meeting as usual in Thomson, Georgia, the reunion will take place in Camden, South Carolina, on 14-16 June 2013. For more details about the reunion or the association, write to Jim or Celia Ansley, 359 Rainbow Lake Dr., Brevard, NC 28712-8770 (phone 828-862-4303.)

For a number of years, Jeff Bowen has been making a name for himself by concentrating on transcribing records of various Native American tribes. His latest book is a revised and expanded edition of his 1998 publication, NORTH CAROLINA EASTERN CHEROKEE INDIAN CENSUS, 1898-1899, 1904, 1906, 1909-1912, 1914.

The censuses in this work pertain to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, headquartered in Cherokee, North Carolina. Members of the Band remained in western North Carolina in 1838-1839 when other Cherokee were removed to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) during the infamous Trail of Tears. Residing on the reservation known as the Qualla Boundary, the Eastern Band was enumerated at different times by various Indian agents employed by the U. D. Department of the Interior. Their data is preserved in the National Archives microfilm series M-595, roll 22.

For inclusion in his book, Bowen transcribed from the microfilm each of the population schedules in chronological order. Under each enumerated household, the name of the individual, family relationship, age, and sex are usually provided. The data concerns approximately 9,000 Cherokees. Some recurring surnames are ARCH, ARMACHAIN/ARMACHANE, ARNEACH/ARNEECH, AXE, BIRD, BLYTHE, CALHOUN, CAT, CATOLSTER/KATOLSTER, COLE, CONSEEN, CORNSILK, CROW, CUCUMBER, DAVIS, DRIVER, FRENCH, GEORGE, GOIN/GOINES/GOINING/GOINS, HILL, HORNBUCKLE, JACKSON, JESSAN, JOHNSON, JUMPER, KEG/KEGG, LAMBERT, LARCH, LITTLEJOHN, LONG, LOSSIE, MCCOY, MARTIN, MUMBLEHEAD, MURPHY, OTTER, OWL, PANTHER, PATTERSON, POWELL, RAPER, RATLER/RATTLER, REED/REID, ROBERSON, SAUNOOKE/SOUNOOKE, SHERRELL/SHERRILL, SMITH, SMOKER, SNEED, STILES, SWANEY/SWAYNEY, SWIMMER, TAYLOR, THOMPSON, WALKINSTICK, WASHINGTON, WATTEY/WATTIE/WATTY, WELCH, WOLFE, and YOUNGDEER.

This new expanded version includes information from eighty-four pages that were blurred on the reel. Due to the valuable assistance of personnel at the National Archives, the indecipherable microfilmed pages of the original census were photocopied, which made the material readable.

Thanks to Bowen’s tenacity, the information from the various enumerations is now complete in book format. Libraries will want to get a copy of the new expanded NORTH CAROLINA EASTERN CHEROKEE INDIAN CENSUS, 1898-1899, 1904, 1906, 1909-1912, 1914 so the material will be easily accessible to genealogists.

The 379-page publication has soft covers, an informative introduction, illustrations, and a full name index. To the book's price of $39.95, buyers should add the cost for postage and handling charges. For U. S. postal mail, the cost is $5.50 for one book and $2.50 for each additional copy; for FedEx ground service, the cost is $7.50 for one copy and $2.50 for each additional book. The volume (item order 8012) may be purchased by check, money order, MasterCard, or Visa from Clearfield Company, 3600 Clipper Mill Rd., Suite 260, Baltimore, Maryland 21211-1953.
