For a number of years, Jeff Bowen has been making a name for himself by concentrating on transcribing records of various Native American tribes. His latest book is a revised and expanded edition of his 1998 publication, NORTH CAROLINA EASTERN CHEROKEE INDIAN CENSUS, 1898-1899, 1904, 1906, 1909-1912, 1914.
The censuses in this work pertain to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, headquartered in Cherokee, North Carolina. Members of the Band remained in western North Carolina in 1838-1839 when other Cherokee were removed to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) during the infamous Trail of Tears. Residing on the reservation known as the Qualla Boundary, the Eastern Band was enumerated at different times by various Indian agents employed by the U. D. Department of the Interior. Their data is preserved in the National Archives microfilm series M-595, roll 22.
For inclusion in his book, Bowen transcribed from the microfilm each of the population schedules in chronological order. Under each enumerated household, the name of the individual, family relationship, age, and sex are usually provided. The data concerns approximately 9,000 Cherokees. This new expanded version includes information from eighty-four pages that were blurred on the reel. Due to the valuable assistance of personnel at the National Archives, the indecipherable microfilmed pages of the original census were photocopied, which made the material readable.
Thanks to Bowen’s tenacity, the information from the various enumerations is now complete in book format. Libraries will want to get a copy of the new expanded NORTH CAROLINA EASTERN CHEROKEE INDIAN CENSUS, 1898-1899, 1904, 1906, 1909-1912, 1914 so the material will be easily accessible to genealogists.
The 379-page publication has soft covers, an informative introduction, illustrations, and a full name index.
