     This week we conclude the selected items found in the 15 February 1940 issue of the Shelby County newspaper, Center Daily News, published in Center, Texas. (Surnames are capitalized for emphasis. Some punctuation may be changed for clarity.)

     Page 3 – One of the ads appearing on this page is for a taxi service owned by W. R. TUTTON. A 1940 DeLuxe Pontiac car was used for local and long distance drives. The taxi stand was located at B-B Cafe.

     Also on page 3 is the “Society” column, edited by Miss Jane IVEY. Notice how some of the wording differs from the way language is used today.

     “Mr. Ben SMITH of Center, now in Houston, is recuperating from an attack of flu, friends and relatives here have been advised. He and Mrs. Smith have been in Houston since the first of the year.

     Miss Adell MAY of Joaquin has returned from a visit to relatives at Mansfield, La.

     Secretary R. R. TODD, of the Triple A office here, was improving Thursday from an attack of flu. He has been confined to bed since the first of the week.

     Mrs. Harvey THOMPSON is visiting her sister, Mrs. Myra LEE, in Fort Worth this week. Mrs. Lee has been seriously ill with pneumonia.

     Mr. and Mrs. Bill HUTTO announce the birth of a son, Wednesday, Feb. 7. He will be called Billy Burke. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. R. B. RAMSEY of this city.

     Mr. and Mrs. Hugh PALMER return to their home in New Orleans, Friday, after a visit with Mrs. Palmer’s mother, Mrs. Jim O’BANION, and other relatives in Center.

Valentine Party for Primary Department

     Mrs. Claude GIBBS, Mrs. Clarence SAMFORD, Miss Marjorie YOUNG, and other workers in the Primary Department of the Methodist Church, entertained the little folks with a Valentine party, Wednesday afternoon, at 4 o’clock in the basement of the church.

     Valentine games were enjoyed by the youngsters and a dainty Valentine was given each of the seventeen children present. At the close of a happy hour, delicious hot chocolate and cookies were served.

Marriage Announced

     The marriage of Miss Lexa Mae WIGGINS to Mr. Truman BATES was solemnized Wednesday evening at eight o’clock at the home of Rev. MEADOWS, who performed the ceremony in the presence of a few friends and relatives.

     Mr. Bates is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. BATES of Houma, La. He is employed by the Texas Company at Centerville. Mrs. Bates is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wiggins of this city. She has been an active and valued worker in the Baptist Church, taking part in all activities of the Y. W. A. and other church auxiliaries. Mr. and Mrs. Bates left Thursday morning for Centerville, where they will make their future home.

Singing School at Nazarene Church

     There will be a singing school to begin Friday night, February 16th, at the Nazarene Church, to be taught Friday and Saturday nights of each week for five weeks by J. W. DAVIS. Tuition will be 75 cents each....

Girl Scouts

     Troop No. 1 of the Girl Scouts met Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the Methodist Church, with good attendance. Plans are being made for a circus, which will take place a few weeks from now. Each patrol is invited to take part and there will be a number of side shows.
