Stone Mountain, GA, will be the setting for the thirtieth annual ANSLEY family reunion scheduled for April 27 - 29, 2007. If you are an ANSLEY descendant but cannot attend, you may want to become a member of the Ansley Family Association (AFA). Twice a year the organization publishes a newsletter which individuals can receive for a $10 annual subscription. The periodical publishes data on recent ANSLEY births, marriages, anniversaries, and deaths throughout the country. The Spring, 2007, issue also contains articles concerning James ANSLEY, born about 1777 and died in 1857 in Warren County, GA; Elum Fletcher ANSLEY (1826 - 1883), who is buried in McDuffie Co., GA; James Thomas ANSLEY (1879 - 1945), who married Frances Josephine IVEY; Dr. James Roland ANSLEY of Mount Vernon, IL; and a brief history of the town of Ansley, NE. Many Americans of Ulster Scot descent are interested in tracing the path of their forebears in Northern Ireland back to Scotland. However, they may not be familiar with the materials available to pursue their ancestral trail. The aim of David Dobson's new book SEARCHING FOR SCOTCH-IRISH ROOTS IN SCOTTISH RECORDS, 1600 - 1750 is to help these genealogists identify resources in Scotland that may be useful in locating the missing links.
In his introduction Dobson provides a brief history of the Scottish settlement in Ireland, which began in earnest in the early 1600s, and its consequences; in the eighteenth century numerous descendants of these settlers became pioneers in America where they became known as the Scotch-Irish. The author points out that few Scots who went to Ulster left any record of their origin, but most of them came from the southwestern shires of Ayr, Dumfries, Kirkcudbright, Lanark, Renfrew, and Wigtown. Since evidence may be contained in published works and manuscripts scattered throughout libraries and archives in Scotland, he explores the limited amount of available sources.
He divides resources into five main categories: church, burgh (town or borough), court, miscellaneous government (tax and military records, for instance), and university (a classification under which he includes family and estate papers). In separate chapters he explains each group in detail. A glossary of terms and abbreviations, lists of family history societies and main libraries and archives in southwestern Scotland, bibliographies of family and local histories of southwestern Scotland published in Great Britain, and a general bibliography make up the remainder of the book.
