     “Athletic News” was the topic of page 11. The full-page article about the football team mentioned cheer leader, B. J. “Binz” SETTEGAST, and coach, Roger G. “Thug” MURRAY of Jackson, Tennessee, who was in charge of all athletics.

     Reprinted in the periodical were two letters, dated 2 March and 4 October 1923, from Rev. Ura A. BROGDEN, who was in Chiungchow, Hainan Islands, China. Personal details about the Presbyterian missionary revealed that he was born on 23 January 1895 near Sparta, Tennessee. A graduate of Lane Theological Seminary, he received his A. B. degree in 1918. He married Miss Della PEEK of Algood, Tennessee on 8 July 1917. The couple had three children: Elizabeth, Helen, and Douglas.

     While in China, Rev. Brogden taught English in the boys’ high school and his wife taught one class in the girls’ school. He wrote that they had organized the Hainan Alumni Association of Cumberland University. Rev. Brogden served as President and his wife, an associate member, served as Secretary and Treasurer. The office of Vice-President was divided between them.

     A separate article concerned plans for the publication of the 1924 Phoenix, the yearbook of Cumberland University. The main staff consisted of

Charles KIRKPATRICK, a faculty member who was serving as supervising editor;

Louis ADAMS, Jr., of Selmer, Tennessee, a sophomore in the college of Arts and Sciences, who was the editor-in-chief;
and
J. M. HOLLADAY (sic) of Camden, Tennessee, a member of the senior law class, was the business manager.

     Students from all departments of the university composed the remainder of the staff. Adams and Kirkpatrick, assisted by others, had also been in charge of publication of the 1923 Phoenix.
