Many people think that nineteenth-century Americans lacked a good educational background. However, some individuals in the late 1800s received more than an elementary education. Examples can be found on pages 16-17 in the FOURTH ANNUAL CATALOGUE OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF TEMPLE, BELL COUNTY, TEXAS, which was published by The Sun Printing House in Temple in 1892. W. T. HAMNER was the school superintendent.

Each grade of the high school course had three terms. Students who completed the entire course of study and passed all exams received a high school diploma.

During the first two terms of the eighth grade, the classes studied were English grammar, general history, arithmetic, and algebra. English composition replaced English grammar in the third term. Students could begin Latin as an optional study in this grade. “Elocution, as a drill,” was given to all pupils in the eighth and ninth grades.

Ninth grade classes in the first two terms were rhetoric and composition, civil government, algebra, and arithmetic. Elementary physics replaced the civil government course in the third term.

The first two terms of the tenth grade offered English literature, mental philosophy, geometry, physical geography, and a review study. During the third term, pupils took subjects such as studies in literature, geometry, and moral philosophy, as well as a review study.

Newspapers may provide data about people’s moving into and out of an area. Information about the KNOX family below comes from the 23 October 1908 (Vol. XXII, No. 8) issue of The Pioneer Exponent, a newspaper published in Comanche, TX. The article originally appeared in the Dublin Progress, printed in Dublin, TX.

“J. M. Knox of the Edna community left with his family Wednesday for Lamesa in Dawson county (sic) near which place they will make their home. Mr. Knox traded for property early last year in Dawson county (sic) some distance from any town, but has since made several trades and his present property upon which he will locate joins the townsite of Lamesa.”

(Editor’s note: KNOX is a surname found in many counties in West Texas where Lamesa is located. Genealogists tracing the J. M. Knox line may want to check these books for possible research clues or family connections: KNOX: JAMES KNOX, SR. AND ELIZABETH CRAIG KNOX AND THEIR DESCENDANTS compiled by Lorene K. Petersen and Jennie Belle Lyle (Pinedale, AZ: James A. Peterson, 1984) and KNOX MEMORIAL, VOLUME ONE and KNOX MEMORIAL, VOLUME TWO by Mrs. J. M. Wood, Sr., whose given name was Christine. These two books were privately published by Wood in Lubbock, TX, in 1972.)
