On 15 July 2009, the Hispanic Heritage Center of Texas HHCTX) formally opened its doors in San Antonio. Its purpose is to recapture and portray accurately the Lone State State’s Hispanic heritage and to champion the stories and lives of Texas’s first pioneer settlers. To achieve these goals, the Center is seeking authentic documents, photographs, paintings, film, and audio recordings in order to preserve the past so future generations will not forget it.

Throughout the year, the Center presents various lectures open to the public, educational programs for students of all ages, and interesting exhibits pertaining to Hispanic culture and history. In October, for instance, one of the program topics will be Hispanic DNA genealogy. Also that month, the Center will sponsor the HHCTX State Genealogy Conference in Laredo, Texas. In addition, the Center offers members-only special events and maintains an internship program which promotes for selected candidates professional development in such areas as research, education, and communication. For more information about the Center, its mission, and all activities, go to the website at http://www.hhctx.org.
