Do you have young children or grandchildren who are showing an interest in their ancestors? If the answer is “yes,” then you may be wondering how to help them learn more about their heritage. A useful book on the subject is the new third edition of ROOTS FOR KIDS: FINDING YOUR FAMILY STORIES by Susan Provost Beller.

Beller's book is based on a twelve-week course that the author developed for her fourth-grade students. Written at a level appropriate for its audience, the volume begins with an introduction to genealogy. Then in various nicely illustrated chapters, she provides basic information about how to ask questions during interviews with relatives about their family, what documents to look for, and how to organize materials. Because many changes have taken place in the field of family research since the first publication of this book in 1989, this new edition discusses how to find sources available on the computer and how to conduct research in local, state, national, and international records.

Each chapter ends with an activity related to the subject just discussed. Younger children will have fun doing these activities with their parents, while older children can work on them on their own. As a result, they will uncover the stories and events that make them and their families unique.

Although the publication is aimed at fourth graders, it can be used for children a few years older as well. The book is suitable for teachers wanting to supplement their social studies curriculum with material on family history. The volume is also a good resource for families looking for a meaningful project to work on together during the pandemic. ROOTS FOR KIDS: FINDING YOUR FAMILY STORIES gives young people the tools to start researching their genealogy and an appetite to learn more about their ancestors.

The 68-page paperback has a preface, illustrations, sample charts, a glossary, and a topical index. To the book's price of $24.50, buyers should add the cost for postage and handling charges. For U. S. postal mail, the cost is $5.50 for one book and $2.50 for each additional copy; for UPS, the cost is $7.50 for one copy and $2.50 for each additional book. The volume (item order #423) may be purchased by check, MasterCard, or Visa from Clearfield Company, 3600 Clipper Mill Rd., Suite 260, Baltimore, Maryland 21211 (for phone orders, call toll free 1-800-296-6687; fax 1-410-752-8492; website www.genealogical.com).
