PFC. LEONARD ENGSTROM DIES A war department telegram was received Sunday afternon [sic] boy [sic] Mrs. W. J. Mannel. 2339 West 120th street, announcing the death from wounds on October 2, 1944 of Pfc. Leonard A. Engstrom, 20, who had made his home with his aunt here for six years prior to his entering the service in March 1943. Pfc. Engstrom was horn in Superior, Wisconsin, on January 6, 1924 the son of Axel and Freda (nee Peters) Engstrom. His parents both preceded him in death and he and his two brothers, Roy, now 19, and James now 13 came to live with Mrs. Mannel. Roy is now married and has established a home of his own while James is still with his aunt. Mrs. Mannel received word from the war department on October 20 that Pfc. Engstrom was missing in action as of September 30, 1944. The telegram she received Sunday was the next official word she received. A letter with further details is promised. Pfc. Engstrom was employed by the Ingersoll Steel company prior to entering service. He was with the United States Army Engineers. Pfc. Engstrom was the grandson of Mrs. Minnie Peters.
