Richard H Lekberg NORTHBRIDGE - Richard H. Lekberg, 87, of Fowler Rd. died Fri. February 24, 2006 in the UMASS Medical Center, Lake Ave., Worcester. He was the husband of the late Vera (Higginbottom) Lekberg who died in 2004. Mr. Lekberg was employed as a salesman for Harr Ford Motors in Worcester for more than 30 years before his retirement in 1996. He had previously owned the former Mumford Motors in Whitinsville. Mr Lekberg was a Major in the U.S. Army during WWII & the Korean War era serving in Northern France, Normandy, Central Europe, Rhineland and the Ardennes. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. Mr. Lekberg is survived by one daughter, Linda M. and her husband Harry A. Jennings of Douglas; his son-in-law, Robert N. Marseglia of Northbridge, one sister, Martha Manning of Uxbridge; 4 grandchildren; Scott Pendergast, M.D. of Ohio, Lori Funari of Sutton, Robert Marseglia Jr. of CT., RIchard Marseglia, M.D. of Worcester; 9 great grandchildren and severl nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one daughter; Cynthia J. Marseglia; one brother; Howard Lekberg; and one sister; Mildred Putman. Funeral Tuesday, February 28, 2006 in the Whitinsville United Methodist Church, 61 Linwood Ave., Whitinsville.

He was in D-Day plus 20, Battle of the Bulge. Very lucky and thankful for being alive. Company Commander, 372nd Engineer Aviation Battalion. Platoon Commander, 97th Engineer Construction Battalion. Captain, Company Commander, 413th Ordnance Battalion, Company B.

On 8 April the Triple Double Bailey Bridge constructed by Company A was opened to traffic, but shortly thereafter the existing far shore abutment failed due to previous enemy demolition and the weight of a Sherman tank. Lt Lekberg and ten (10) men were injured in this accident.
