"William McDowell, Sr. was the first of the McDowell family in America. He was a Scot who came from Ireland to North Carolina and subsequently to Jeffrey's Creek in Darlington District, South Carolina. William McDowell Sr. was a loyal friend of his adopted country and suffered much from the Tories. He married Catherine Tomlinson on May 12, 1768. Their children were: Mary, b. 28 Oct 1769; Margaret b. Feb 4, 1773; Elizabeth b. April 10, 1775; John b. 16 Jul 1777; Lucy, b. Nov 22,1779; William Jr. b. Aug 6, 1782; and Isabella b. Jul 16, 1784 ......"
" .... William McDowell, Jr. was married on April 30, 1812 to Frances McCown, daughter of John and Sarah McCown. Frances was born January 12, 1796 and died October 4, 1857. William moved to Alabama in 1835 and died April 29, 1854. Children of William McDowell and Frances McCown were (1) John Robert b. 10-29-1813, d. 1-24-1897; (2) David Adelbert Kennedy b. 10-26-1836, d. 5-11-1911; (3) Caroline b. 3-9-1839, d. 3-8-1903 who married David McIntosh; (4) Elizabeth Louisa b. 2-18-1820, d. 8-9-1858 married Ferrin Baldwin. Other children, which did not survive to adulthood, were William Tomlinson, James Drayton.

I William McDowell of the County and state aforesaid being convinced that I must die and now being sound in mind do make this my last Will and testament to wit:
To my wife Frances McDowell I give or will all my landed estate during her natural life after her decease to my son D. A. K. McDowell. I give or will the above mentioned landed estate.
Secondly: To my Wife Frances McDowell I give or will all my stock to have forever consisting of Horses Hogs & Cattle of all descriptions. Also I give to her all my household and Kitchen furniture all of my Wagons Carts and farming tools of every description, I give to her my pleasure Carriage and Buggy, I give to her all the produce of my farm, Cotton excepted which shall or may be made this year 1854, I give to her the folowing named Negroes George, Jerry, Dick, Drina, Kelly, Anny, Cella, Reane, Tiny, Kate, Marjain, Rhoda; - Next I will next that all my debts be paid and lastly I will all my remaining property consisting of negroes and Money, Notes, &c to my Children namely John R. McDowell, Louisa E. Baldwin Sarah Isabella McDowell, Martha W McDowell D A K McDowell, Margaret Caroline McDowell to be divided equally between them January 1855. I hereby appoint My Wife Frances McDowell my Executrix.

Pilkington subscribing Witnesses to the foregoing Will of Wm McDowell dec'd personally appeared in open Court and after being duly sworn depose and say that the foregoing is the last Will and testament of Wm McDowell dec'd so far as they know or believe, that they severally saw the said Wm McDowell sign the same and heard him declare that it was his last Will and testament, that they severally on the day of the execution of said Will to Wit the 25th April 1854 in the presence of each other and in the presence and at the request of the said Wm McDowell, signed their names as Witnesses thereto; that at the time of signing publishing and declaring the same by the said William McDowell to be his last Will and testament he was of sound and disposing mind and memory and over the age of twenty one and said Will was executed in Wilcox County.

William McDowell dec'd ) Be it remembered that on this day before the Probate Court of Wilcox County, came Francis McDowell Executrix & c of William McDowell decd. as also appeared Ferrin Baldwin in right of his wife Louisa E. and John R. McDowell who is hereby appointed Guardian for the Minor heirs of said Estate. And the said Francis McDowell Executrix as aforesaid having at a previous term of this Court filed an account between herself and said estate charging herself with all the assetts received as such executrix and giving herself credit with such vouchers and written evidences as she relies on to sustain the credit side of said account for a final Settlement of said Estate. And she prays the Court now at this day to audit & examine said accounts and to State and allow the Same and render decrees thereon.

To Ferrin Baldwin and Louisa E. his wife for the use of the said Louisa E. the Sum of Twenty one Hundred & Twenty Six 97/100 Dollars which is hereby assessed and decreed as her distributive share of said estate and which the said Francis McDowell is hereby decreed to pay over to them c.

To John R. McDowell the Sum of Twenty one hundred and Twenty Six 97/199 Dollars which is hereby assessed and decreed as his distributive Share of said estate, and which the Said Francis McDowell is hereby decreed to pay over to him c.

To Sarah J. McDowell the Sum of Twenty one Hundred & Twenty Six 97/100 Dollars which is hereby assessed & decreed as her distributive Share of said estate, which the Said Francis McDowell is hereby decreed to pay over to her c.

To Martha W. McDowell the Sum of Twenty one Hundred & Twenty Six 97/100 Dollars which is hereby assessed & decreed as her distributive Share of said Estate which the said Francis McDowell is hereby decreed to pay over to her c.

To David A. K. McDowell a minor by his Guardian John R. McDowell the Sum of Twenty one Hundred & Twenty Six 97/100 Dollars which is hereby assessed & decreed as his distributive Share of said Estate & which the said Francis McDowell is hereby decreed to pay over to him by his Guardian aforesaid.

To Caroline McDowell a minor by her Guardian John R. McDowell the Sum of Twenty one hundred and Twenty six 97/100 Dollars which is hereby assessed and decreed as her distributive Share of said estate, and which the Said Francis McDowell is hereby decreed to pay over to her by her Guardian aforesaid.

Thereupon came the said Frances McDowell and filed receipts in full for the above decrees - which receipts, were ordered to be recorded and the decrees Satisfied. Said Receipts are in words and figures following to wit:

Received Camden 18 June 1855 of Mrs. Francis McDowell Executrix & c of William McDowell decd The Sum of Twenty one Hundred and Twenty Six 97/100 Dollars being full payment Satisfaction and discharge of a decree this day recorded in the Probate Court of Wilcox County Ala on the final Settlement of the Estate of William McDowell decd in favor of David A. K. McDowell by his Guardian John R. McDowell. Received also from Francis McDowell Executrix as aforesaid the Sum of Twenty one Hundred and Twenty Six 97/100 Dollars being full payment Satisfaction and discharge of a decree rendered in the Probate Court of Wilcox County Ala, on the final Settlement of the Estate of William McDowell, decd in favor of Caroline McDowell a Minor by his Guardian.

They had two daughters - Madeline Stanford McDowell who married John Rinehard Blue of Romney, West Virginia, and Ruth Moultreie McDowell, who married Claiborne Holmes Kinnard III of Franklin, Tennessee...."

His widow and young children later moved to Montgomery, Alabama. Madeline died in 1966. Both are buried in the McDowell Cemetery near Camden, Alabama."
