CREAGH FAMILY NOTES
WILCOX CO., ALABAMA

It appears from the 1840 Census of Wilcox County that Thomas B. Creagh was the oldest member of the Creagh family, and the likely father of several sons found on census reports. The 1840 Census indicates Thomas B. Creagh was b. 1760-1770. Probate court records of his estate in Wilcox County indicates he died in 1843.

His son John G. Creagh was appointed Administrator of his estate and sureties includes G. W. Creagh, M. W. Creagh, and Alexander M. Creagh. All these individuals are probably his sons but there may also be other children. 

The 1840 Census of Wilcox County also lists the household of James Cree [Creah]. It seems possible that James Cree might also be son of Thomas B. Creagh but research to date has not provided evidence of that connection. So at this point, my conclusion is that there can be no conclusion of a connection between these two genealogical lines. Research of this surname is a work in progress and perhaps this question will be resolved as more information is found.

Census reports indicates some of these families moved back and forth between Wilcox and Clarke County, Alabama.

Sterrett Judge of the County Court of said County in the sum of twenty five thousand Dollars for the faithful payment of which sum will and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs Executors administrators and assigns Jointly and Severally firmly by these presents Sealed with our Seals and dated this 21st day of April A.D. 1843.
The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound John G. Creagh has been duly appointed administrator of the Estate of Thomas B. Creagh dec’d now therefore should the said John G. Creagh well and truly perform all the duties as administrator of said Estate then this obligation to be null and void, else to be and remain in full force & effect.

Creagh to our said Court we have caused these our Letters of Administration to issue in favor of the said John G. Creagh upon the Estate of Thomas B. Creagh dec’d and in every case which occasion may require he is authorized to bring suit and be sued as the lawful administrator of the said Thomas B. Creagh deceased as aforesaid.

Family of Alexander M. Creagh
Alexander M. Creagh was b. 1790-1800 in South Carolina; d. 1854 in Wilcox Co., Alabama. He married Willie S. _______ b. 1825 Alabama. After Alexander M. his widow, Willie S. (___) Creagh married 2nd to William H. Ketchum. 

William H. Ketchum was also previously married. He mar. (1) _________ and (2) Willis S. (_____) Creagh widow of Alexander M. Creagh.

Cooper are held and firmly bound to John A. Jackson Judge of the Probate Court of Wilcox County and his Successors in office in the penal sum of four hundred thousand Dollars which sum will and truly to be Made we bind ourselves each and severally our heirs Administrators Executives and assigns given under our hands and Seals this the 27th day of July A. D. 1854. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound Mimorable W. Creagh and Willie S. Creagh has been appointed Administrator and Administratrix of the Estate of Alexander M. Creagh late of said county Deceased.
Now therefore should the above bound Mimorable W. Creagh Administrator and Willie S. COOPER: Aaron Burr Cooper, lawyer, born Dec 11, 1800 in Morris County, New Jersey, came to Mobile Co. Ala in 1822, and a year later to Clarke Co. and in 1826 to Monroe County. In 1850 to Wilcox County. Married twice, the second time to Mrs. Creagh, widow of Judge John G. Creagh of Clarke Co. Two of his sons were killed in the war. (Owen’s History Vol. III Pg 396)

Died on Monday 30th of July in her 24th year of perpureal fever at the residence of her brother-in-law, Hon. John G. Creagh, near Clarkesville, Clarke County, Ala. Mrs. Ann D. Creagh, consort of Mr. Alexander Creagh of Clarke County. Also left infant son seven days old. Her aged widowed mother, brothers and sisters also survive.

Will of John G. Creigh

As life is uncertain and I am anxious to dispose of my property by Will. I now made & publish the following as my last Will and Testament.
In the first place I appoint A. M. Creigh my Executor and so far as I have authority the Guardian of John W. Creigh. Secondly I direct my said Executor to pay off & satisfy all debts and demands which now Exist against me. 
Thirdly. I give and bequeath to my Wife the one half of my estate and the use of the others half until John W. Creigh shall arrive at the age of twenty one. Out of the proceeds of said “half” she is to support cloth and educate him, 
Fourthly. I give unto John W. Creigh the one half of my estate with the condition and limitation above.
Fifthly, should, I die before John E. Barren arrive at the age of twenty one I wish him to remain in my family and to protected until he arrives at that age. In Witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed, my name,
