GASS

James Alexander Gass was born in Paris, KY November 24, 1833. He went to Texas in 1858 and was a member of Company G 6th Texas Calvary. After the War, he came to Pickens County setting in the Benevola Community. On January 17, 1867 he married Mary Jane Giles (who was Mary Ann Mobley) of Benevola. There was one stepdaughter, Mrs. Alice Duncan, mother of Dr. Wallace Duncan. The couple had two sons, David William Gass and Shep Gass. After his wife's death, he married Mrs. W. A. Johnson of the Raleigh Community on January 17, 1882. There were two stepdaughters, Mrs. W. Going and Mrs. Cliff Harkins. 

Mr. Gass served one term in the Legislature and reflected this with credit. He served the people of Pickens County as a member of the County Commissioners Court. 

He died at his home in Benevola in 1917.

David William Gass, M.D., son of James Alexander Gass, was born in Benevola on January 16, 1868 and died April 19, 1936. He was reared in Benevola and went to medical school in Birmingham. He practiced medicine in Benevola and later in Pickensville. He moved to Pickensville in 1900 and practiced medicine there for thirty-six years. He married Julia Long.
