A Thatched Hut in Vermilionville in Lafayette LA
French-speaking Acadians were sent into exile by the British. Forced to leave their homeland in Nova
Scotia, Canada, many of these settlers, now known as "Cajuns" found a new home in the fertile marsh-
lands and prairies of South Louisiana.  There, they joined the Native Americans, as well as Creoles, the
descendants of Africans, West Indian and European pioneers.  Through innovation, cooperation and hard
work, along with the help from Native Americans, the Cajuns and Creoles survived and eventually flourished
in South Louisiana.  Their stores are being recreated today in Vermilionville.
