Remains of the union hall in the old deserted
community of Granite Mine, near Philipsburg, Montana.
This was a 3 story building, built in 1890 for $23,000, was the
social enter in this town. The upper stories
were brick and theroof was covered with sheet metal. the
building had a cast iron front. The second floor
housed union
offices, a library and a large hall with 18 foot ceilings, wallpaper
and a special floor for dancing. At the
back was a stage and 500 folding chairs provided seating for
concerts, operas and theatricals. The
first floor was the recreation hall for the miners with billiards
and card tables. On the third floor was a
meeting room used by clubs and secret orders. In the 1890's
buildings along Main Street included saloons,
rooming houses and restaurants. Across the street from the
Union Hall was the newspaper office, and the
gully below was Chinatown and the red light district. |
