........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Family Group Sheet from Judy Nation [email protected] Subject* William Williams Sr. (15535)Bi ography* __ ___ ____ He alledgely was born in Ireland. William Williams was a Revolutionary War soldier. Well afterWilliam's death in 1831, his family submitted a pension application for William's time of military service. This pension application is a major source for the names of William's and Lucy's children. It has also the birth dates for William, Lucy, and most of their children. William had a younger brother named Moses that also served in the war. Moses has a pension application submitted by his children. This application includes the birth date for his older brother William, which matches William's birth date in his own pension application. Please beware that this document shows William's correct birth date of March 15, 1753 but someone with a different handwriting tried to alter his birth year to read 1733. This was also done to William's sister Rebekah's birth date to make her birth year read 1734 instead of 1754. These alterations probably were done by someone researching Moses Williams who incorrectly believed that William and Rebekah were the parents of Moses and changed their birth years to make them old enough to be Moses' parents. Moses' father is correctly identified as Benjamin on the deed of land inherited by Moses in Chester Co., SC. William lived at Lockhart's Shoals on the Broad River in the Chester District, SC when he enlisted in the army in the fall of 1775. He was a private and an officer under Capts. Thomas Robins, Joseph Jolly, Joseph Brown, John McClure, and Cols. Brown, John Winn, Goodwyn, Brandon, and Bratton. He was in the Snow Campaign, the Florida Campaign, and expeditions against the indians. At some time, he was under Capt. James McElhanney and Col. Samuel Hammond. He was also in the battles at Stono, Charleston, Rocky Mount, Hanging Rock, Fish Dam Ford, Blackstock's Plantation, Cowpens, One Door Bridge, and Eutaw Springs. He was wounded by a sabre at Cowpens. This information came from the "Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution". William was granted landed in Chester Co., SC in 1786 apparently due to his Rev. War service. His father Benjamin Williams purchased this land in 1788. Benjamin sold 100 acres of this land to his other son Moses Williams. William is shown living in the Lancaster Co. in 1790 and Kershaw Co., SC in 1810, 1820, and 1830 per the U.S. Census. He is shown to be back in Chester County in 1800, probably there to help run his father Benjamin's farm after his death. William after the war moved to Rocky Mount in Lancaster Co, SC and then moved to Kershaw District, SC where he married Lucy, daughter of Daniel Horton of Lynches Creek, SC (probably in Kershaw Dist.). William's Will (actually estate papers) states that his Will was read at Hanging Rock Methodist Church which may mean he is buried there. There are two very important sources that identify William's children; the Rev. War pension application submitted for William and real estate deeds of Kershaw Co. that mention the children receiving portions of William's former estate. Neither of the sources by themselves list all the children but together a complete list can be formed. The pension application lists all the "known living" children in an 1850 document. The one child that is not shown in the application is Alfred J. Williams. It is presumed that Alfred is dead before 1840 as he is not in that year's census or any thereafter. Alfred is identified as a child of Willaim Williams in an 1834 deed transaction of him selling his inherited portion of William Williams' former estate to Joakim Falkenberry (his nephew, son of Alfred's sister Mary Williams Faulkenberry)). This deed states "Alfred Williams being an heir like Nathaniel Williams". It is presumed that William's son Daniel was left out of the inheritence of William's estate. Daniel was living in Muscogee Co., GA when his father died in 1831. In 1836 he gave Thomas J. Cauthen power of attorney to represent his interests in the settlement of William William's estate (found in Deed Book "O", page 81). This was too late as William's land was already divided up between Daniel's mother and his siblings. This explains the "one tenth part of two thirds of William's estate" inherited by each of the children that is mentioned in the deeds (if Daniel was included it should have said "one eleventh part"). Lucy Williams' portion is mentioned as "one third part" of the estate. There are actually two different sets of deeds involving William's estate. The first set deals with Alfred J. Williams purchasing portions of William's estate from his mother Lucy and his siblings Joshua, Nathaniel, John (says of Lancaster Co.), Mary Falkenberry, and Margaret Mehaffey. The second set deals with Lucy, Joshua, Nathaniel, Henry Horton (Rhoda's husband), and Alfred J. selling portions of William Williams' former estate to Joakim Falkenberry (son of Joakim Faulkenberry Sr. and Mary Williams Faulkenberry, daughter of William Williams). Both sets of deeds took place in 1834 and are in Deed Book "N" of Kershaw Co., SC. Another very interesting thing about the last set of deeds is that a reference is made that William Williams' former estate was originally granted to Joshua Williams in 1779 (obviously NOT William's son named Joshua but possibly Williams' grandfather named Joshua). This is the same land that is mentioned in the notes for Benjamin Williams. This Joshua Williams (of Colleton Co.) was granted this land for 500 pounds and on the same day sold it to Benjamin Williams (William's father) for 10 shillings. This may indicate that Benjamin was living in Page 1 the Hanging Rock Creek area (to become the town of Kershaw) before he lived in Chester Co., SC. Supporting references: 1. Deeds in Kershaw County Courthouse, SC - Book "N", pages 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 115, 116, 117, 119, 120, and 121 (William Williams former estate) 2. Biography: __ ___ ____ Before both the Revolutionary War and his marriage, he lived on "Lockhart Shoals, on Broad River , Chester District , SC ". William's half brother, Moses, also lived in Chester District. Note* __ ___ ____ Lucy's application for a widow's pension in 1846 gives an interesting picture of William's life and activities. The affidavit states William Williams settled on and lived out his life on Lynche's Creek, Kershaw District , SC. He is described in the affidavit as "a good soldier and a brave man" who was engaged in battles at Hanging Rock, Fish Dam Ford, One Door Bridge , and Eutaw Springs, among others. From this document, we also know that William was with his half-brother, Moses, when Moses was wounded "before the fall of Charleston ". His activities for the American cause continued through the War; he is described as "a soldier...of the most excellent character." Returning to Kershaw District after the War, William farmed as he and Lucy raised a large family. Birth* 15 Mar 1753 South Carolina. Most likely the bible originally belonged to William and Lucy Williams and was passed down to Joshua. If you examine the handwriting in the bible you will notice several distinct styles. The much larger handwriting is of the information on William, Lucy, and their children. For the most part, the smaller handwriting styles are of Joshua's children. The bible does not state that the individuals are Joshua's children but this can be deduced if you examine the birth dates closely. The birth dates and names are spread over three pages but the dates are in sequence and appropriately spaced to the point that it strongly suggests that all the individuals were born of the same mother. In this list of children is Andrew Williams, born May 22, 1804, whom is a proven son of Joshua Williams. This list also matches very well with Joshua's household in the 1820 census, except for two missing male children who may have died sometime before 1820. It is presumed that all but one of Joshua's male children moved west in the 1830s along with some of Joshua's siblings and other relations since they are not found in Kershaw District or Lancaster District in later census. There is a reasonable chance the may have moved to Georgia, Alabama or Mississippi since that is where many of the Williams and Hortons moved. I suspect that a major reason that all but one of Joshua's children moved to the west in the 1830s is because of some hard feelings over Joshua's remarriage. Joshua's son David Williams, who moved to Harris Co., GA and later to Sabine Co., TX, named none of his children after his father. - D. Todd, October, 2001. M John Cornelius Williams (15549)Name-Var: __ ___ ____ John Chalmers Williams Biography* __ ___ ____ I am sure that the John C. Williams of Lancaster Co., SC shown in the 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Federal Census is the son of William Williams of Kershaw Co., SC. I researched all the John Williams of Lancaster County and there was only one John that could have been the son of William Williams of Kershaw County. All the other John Williams had fathers other than William Williams. I know that John Williams lived in Lancaster County because when his father's estate was sold in 1834, a deed stated that he lived in the District of Lancaster County, SC. Some Williams researchers have John Williams incorrectly moving to Alabama with some of his siblings. The Revolutionary War Page 4 Pension Papers submitted by William Williams' children states which children moved west and John was not listed among them. - D. Todd, May 2001 Further evidence that John C. Williams is the son of William and Lucy Horton Williams is that Almetta Williams Sturkie (died in 1994 at 99 years of age), granddaughter of John C. Williams, told her family that she was related to the Ned Williams family living on the south side of the town of Kershaw, SC. - Source: Ann Sturkie Dixon (great granddaughter of John C. Williams), May 2001 John is listed in the 1860 census for Lancaster County. He is living very near to his nephew Andrew and great nephew William J. Williams (Andrew's son). He is found again in Flat Creek Twp., Lancaster Co., SC per the 1870 and 1880 census. The Tax Duplicate Book of Lancaster Co., SC for the year ending September 1, 1868 lists John C. Williams as owning 30 acres of arable or plowable lands, 70 acres of wooded, uncultivated, or marsh lands, 1 horse, 12 cattle, 1 dog, and other taxable property for a total value of $381. For this property, John paid a total of $2.85 in state taxes. John is buried at Beaver Creek Baptist Church, Heath Springs, Lancaster Co., SC. Note* __ ___ ____ Obituary in the Arcadia Sunlight on January 20, 1912: Mrs. Georgia Ann Williams was born in Oglethorpe, Georgia on Novemer 12, 1838, and died January 17 1912, aged 73 years, 2 months, and 5 days. Early in life she gave her heart to God and at the age of twenty united with the M. E. Church South. She was united in marriage to J. W. Williams on July 3, 1860, to this union was born six children, three boys and three girls, all of whom survive her. She leaves to mourn her departure a loving husband, six childen, and a number of grandchildren and a host of friends. He life has been one of true Christian living and was an inspiration to better living for those who knew her. When the summons came to her she was ready to go and her great desire was to be with her Savior. She was gone but her memory still lives to bless her loved ones and those who knew her. The church was strengthened by her sweet devotion to God and the world has been made a better place by her having lived in it and Heaven is now brighter because she has gone home to Glory. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Lawellin at the home Sunday afternoon at two P.M. and the remains laid to rest in Sheffield Cemetery. The devoted love of the children of Mrs. Williams for their mother was emphatically demonstrated by the fact that although most of them lived at a distance, they were present at the funeral. C. W. Wiliams, he oldest son, lives in Tulsa, Okla, but he came to the funeral Page 1 to see his mother for the last time. J. H. Williams, the second son, lives in Delta, Colo, but the immense snow drifts and he chilling blast of Winter did not prevent him from making the long trip. J. F. Williams of Portand, Ore. left his distant home, fought against a severe blizzard and the bitter elements of Winterland arrived in Arcadia in time to last look at the face of his mother. Mrs. Wilie Stipp, of Witchita, came from her home to take a last look at he mother's face. Mrs. T. A Dugan and M. D. Williams demonstrated their love by the faithful and continuous care during her illness. The gentle way in which loving hands administered to Grandma Williams' care during her illness is strong proof that great love abounds in he hearts of some children for their parents and his spirit, if cultivated, would make a world better, happier, and more grand for all who live in it. The Revolutionary War Pension Papers submitted by William Williams' children states which children moved west and John was not listed among them. Misc* 22 Dec 1887 Kershaw County, South Carolina; Seaborn was a co-defendant with hs father-in-law, Lewis Phillips, in a court trial. The plaintiff, Elizabeth Gardner, sued him for her dower of land from the estate of her deceased husband, Darling Gardner. Seaborn and Lewis Phillips had been in possession of 400 acres of land situated on Ned's Branch and Lynches Creek. Elizabeth Gardner testified that the land Page 3 was purchased by her husband, Darling Gardner, from Wiliam Clyburn in 1835 or 1836. The judge ruled in favor of Elizabeth Gardner due to the facts that there was a deed belonging to Darling Gardner and no deed belonging to Seaborn Willams and Lewis Phillips. It is unclear from the records if the land was repossessed by Elizabeth Gardner or if she was paid money for compensation.
