This is the page of Kittil Olsen from the Klabu farm in the Sigdal Kommune in Buskerud (county) in Norway. Klabu is the spelling you find today in Norway on maps and in farm reference books. Kittil emmigrated to America in 1853 as Kittil Olsen. He also enlisted in the Civil War as Kittil Olsen.
He adopted the farm name as his surname and his wife and children used Kittil Olsen Klabo as his full name on his tombstone. They also all used Klabo as their surnames.
It is interesting, but noe particularily surprising to note that in the late portion of his life, he wrote some letters to his family in Norway and spelled the name Klaboe. An old book on Worth County, Iowa says he sometimes used his farm name of Klabbo. His family obviously perferred the Klabo spelling as that was used by all who outlived Kittil. More on names later.
