An Iowa Family

Niles Gregg died January 31, 1922 in Portland, Oregan and was buried February 7, 1922 in Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Sarah Cody Gregg died January 2, 1929 in Cedar Township and was buried in Graceland Park Cemetery also.

From the Biographical History of Cherokee County, dated 1889:

NILES GREGG is one of the early settlers and well-known citizens of Cherokee County, having come here in 1869. He was born in Belmont County, Ohio, May 31, 1847, and is a son of Nelson Gregg, one of the early settlers of Cedar Township, but now a resident of Meriden, Iowa. When Niles was fifteen years of age his parents emigrated to Iowa and settled in Warren County, where they lived three years. At the end of that period of time they went to Marion County, Iowa, and there they resided until 1869, when the father came to Cherokee County and took a homestead in Cedar Township. Niles remained with his father one year after that time and then returned to Marion County where he worked two years. He then came back to Cherokee County and bought a Government homestead adjoining his father's farm. There he has since resided, devoting his time and attention to the improvement and cultivation of his farm. As his means increased he made additions to his first purchase, and now owns 200 acres of choice land. This farm is admirably adapted to the raising of live-stock, as it is watered by Mill Creek. Mr. Gregg keeps about 100 head of cattle, and has eighteen head of horses. He has erected a small house, and has good farm buildings for the care and protection of live-stock and grain. Mr. Gregg was united in marriage in 1871, at Knoxville, Iowa, to Miss Sarah E. Cody, a daughter of Austin Cody, Esq. Two children have been born of this marriage: Arthur and Delia. Politically our subject has no party ties, preferring to use his own judgment as to who shall fill the offices of this Government. He is a man yet in the prime of life, and has attained an advanced position, socially and financially, in the county.

Niles Gregg and Sarah E. Cody

Niles Gregg came to Cedar Township in 1869. He was born in Ohio in 1847 and was the son of Nelson Gregg, who also was an early settler in Cedar Township, locating near Mill Creek. Niles married Sarah E. CODY at Knowxville Iowa in 1871. She was the daughter of Austin Cody, Esq. Niles and Sarah were the parents of two children: Arthur and Della. Arthur married Clara Nelson and their children were: Raymond (married Thelma Tilton - children were Shirley, Gary and John), Francis (never married), and Leslie (married Alice Cave-children were Delores, Francis, Donna and Darlene). Della married Ed Rasmus and their children were: Harold, Dale, Art, Eva and Elizabeth.

Notes: Sarah E. Cody was Mary Cody's sister. Niles and Sarah lived about a mile south of Charles and Frank Foster. Mary may have come to live or visit with her older sister where she met Frank Foster.
